Spoilers for the ending of Anora. After Ani’s marriage to Ivan is annulled, Igor returns her engagement ring and drives her home. In the car, Ani initiates sex, but recoils when Igor tries to kiss her; she then breaks down crying in his arms. The film resolves the marriage plot, not Ani’s future. Its final scene offers intimacy and grief without confirming a romance, rescue, or settled next chapter.

What happens at the end of Anora?

Ani and Ivan’s marriage is annulled after his parents arrive in New York and set out to undo it. Igor returns Ani’s engagement ring and drives her home. During the ride, Ani initiates sex. When Igor moves to kiss her, she pulls away, then cries in his arms.

That sequence is the ending’s essential contradiction: Ani reaches for physical contact, but cannot—or does not want to—continue into a kiss. The film does not explain her feelings in dialogue or tell us what happens after the car stops.

Why does Ani cry?

The scene supports several readings, but no single one is confirmed. Ani may be grieving the collapse of the future suggested by her brief marriage; she may be overwhelmed by the difference between familiar physical contact and emotional closeness; or the tears may hold several feelings at once. Treating them as proof of one specific motive would claim more than the film shows.

One grounded interpretation is that the scene breaks open the transactional roles that have shaped much of Ani’s life. She initiates contact on her own terms, then recoils when it shifts toward a kiss. The movement from initiative to withdrawal and crying can suggest a search for connection that she cannot comfortably sustain. That is an interpretation of the scene, not a diagnosis or confirmed explanation.

Is Igor a new romantic partner?

The ending does not establish that Ani and Igor become a couple. It gives them a moment of closeness, but no promise of a relationship or shared future. Igor’s care in returning the ring and driving Ani home matters in the scene; it does not make him a confirmed replacement for Ivan or turn the ending into a rescue.

How the ending overturns the Cinderella story

The Festival de Cannes describes the film’s setup as a “Cinderella story”: a young Brooklyn sex worker meets and impulsively marries an oligarch’s son, until his parents arrive seeking an annulment. The wedding briefly resembles an escape into security, but the annulment dismantles that apparent happy ending.

The final car scene does not restore the fairy-tale promise with a new romance. Ani has the ring, a tangible remnant of the marriage, but the film ends not with a secure future but with an emotionally unsettled encounter. The subversion lies in refusing the expected payoff: marriage does not deliver lasting safety, and intimacy does not automatically resolve what has been lost.

What Sean Baker and Mikey Madison say about the ending

Writer-director Sean Baker described the car scene as “a moment of intimacy that we haven’t seen earlier in the film” and said, “There’s a catharsis there.” But he also said the film gives no “solid answer of what’s about to come in Ani’s life,” leaving the audience to “sort of write the ending.” His comments support reading the scene as emotionally significant without treating it as a forecast of Ani’s next move. Baker’s interview and transcript, published by Texas Public Radio on October 20, 2024, note that the audio is the authoritative record if the transcript is updated.

Mikey Madison has likewise described the ending as purposefully open to different interpretations: what viewers think Ani wants or feels may reflect the viewer as much as the film supplies a definitive answer. ELLE’s report on Madison’s perspective also recounts the concrete sequence of the final scene.

Why the ambiguity matters

The ending can be read along two related lines: whether the scene closes Ani’s story or deliberately leaves her future unresolved, and whether her sexual initiative expresses control, a bid for connection, or both. The film supplies evidence for the gestures—ring, initiation, recoil, tears—but not a definitive symbolic key. Baker’s comments make that openness part of the intended effect rather than a puzzle with one officially confirmed solution.

Anora is a 2024 U.S. feature written, directed, and edited by Sean Baker, starring Mikey Madison as Ani. The Festival de Cannes lists its runtime as 138 minutes and identifies it as the 2024 Palme d’Or winner. The Associated Press also reported the film’s Palme d’Or win on May 25, 2024, describing it as a comic but devastating Brooklyn story. Read the AP report.
