An autopsy was reported to confirm drowning and injuries to her neck and back, but investigators said they could not explain how she got from her car to the water. The 2011 reports did not establish whether her death was an accident, suicide, or homicide.
Who was Anneka Di Lorenzo?
Contemporary coverage identified her as Anneka Vasta and said she was known as Anneka Di Lorenzo during her Penthouse career. A published IMDb biography lists her birth name as Marjorie Lee Thoreson; the available reporting does not independently document that name. CBS News described her as Penthouse Pet of the Year in 1975 and reported that she appeared in the 1979 film Caligula.
The IMDb biography also lists appearances in The Centerfold Girls (1974), Messalina, Messalina! (1977), and Dressed to Kill (1980). Those credits provide career context, but they do not explain the circumstances of her death.
What happened to her in January 2011?
Joggers found Vasta’s body on a Camp Pendleton beach on January 4, 2011. CBS reported that an autopsy confirmed drowning and that she had a broken neck and back. Her car was found near an Interstate 5 overlook.

The location raised questions rather than answering them. Investigators said a jump from the overlook did not readily account for the body reaching the water, given shoreline and tide conditions as they understood them. In October 2011, Sky News quoted NCIS Special Agent Rachel McGranaghan, who was leading the investigation: “The main unanswered question that we have is how she got from her vehicle to the water. We know her life ended in the water, in some circumstance, we just don’t know how.” Sky News reported the statement at the time; it is not an update on the investigation’s present status.
Was Anneka Di Lorenzo murdered?
The available 2011 accounts do not prove murder. They report drowning and serious injuries, while leaving unexplained how she reached the water. Contemporary reports discussed competing possibilities, but none established a definitive manner of death. The sources reviewed report no criminal charges at that time, and they do not establish a later official resolution.

Di Lorenzo also pursued a harassment case against Penthouse International. The New York appellate record in Thoreson v. Penthouse International, Ltd. says a trial court awarded her $60,000 in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages in 1990. On appeal, the court vacated the punitive award and otherwise affirmed the judgment. The appellate outcome therefore does not support saying she ultimately kept the $4 million punitive award.
