Madison won the 2025 Academy Award for Best Actress, but the strongest argument for her work is on screen—in the specificity, force and emotional shifts she brings to the role.
What makes Madison’s performance stand out?
Ani is forceful without being one-note
Anora is a 2024 feature written and directed by Sean Baker. The Festival de Cannes lists its running time as 138 minutes, names Madison as Ani, and records the film as the 2024 Palme d’or winner. The official Cannes film record establishes the setting for a performance that has to hold the audience’s attention across a feature-length story.

Ani is bold, quick to assert herself and physically expressive. But reducing her to swagger would miss what Madison builds beneath it. In an interview with British Vogue, Madison described Ani as “very layered and complex,” with sensitivity beneath her anger or sass. That tension gives the character texture: her confidence does not erase her vulnerability, and her softer moments do not cancel her capacity to push back.
Physicality and vocal detail make the character specific
The role asks Madison to communicate through more than dialogue. TheWrap’s interview describes Ani as a conspicuous, physically expressive presence, and reports that Madison learned pole dancing, trained for a Brighton Beach accent and performed her own stunts. Those choices help make Ani feel rooted in a particular place and embodied in the scene, rather than like a collection of broad character traits.

TheWrap also reports that Madison shadowed a sex worker for months and learned Russian as part of her preparation. These details do not, by themselves, explain the performance’s impact; what matters is how the work supports a character who feels particular rather than abstract.
Empathy shapes the emotional turns
Madison told TheWrap, “The most important thing is I have to completely empathize with this character.” She also said, “I don’t like to do anything halfway.” Her comments clarify the performance’s central balance: Ani can be abrasive, funny, vulnerable or determined without seeming to switch into a different person. Madison’s close attention to Ani’s point of view makes those shifts feel connected.
That is a demanding kind of acting. The performance has to sustain Ani’s force while allowing the audience to recognize the sensitivity underneath it. Madison’s achievement is not simply that she makes the character memorable; it is that she makes her contradictions legible.

The film’s Cannes honor is a separate achievement, not a personal acting prize for Madison: the Festival de Cannes records Anora as the 2024 Palme d’or winner. Its 2025 retrospective lists Anora at 408 nominations and 142 awards. That is the festival’s dated tally, not a live or universal count of every recognition the film has received. No. The phrase is an argument about the quality of Madison’s work, not a literal claim that she won every acting prize or that there is one objective measure of merit. The established outcomes are clear: she won the Oscar for Best Actress, and Anora won the Palme d’or and five Oscars in total. Those honors recognize the film and performance, while the case for Madison’s work rests on the craft visible in Ani’s physical presence, emotional complexity and specificity.
