She recalled feeling uncomfortable but pretending to be excited because she feared being labeled “difficult.” She did not identify the film or the people involved.
What Hathaway said happened
In an interview with V Magazine, reported by the Los Angeles Times on April 23, 2024, Hathaway recalled that it was considered normal in the 2000s to ask actors to make out with prospective co-stars to test their chemistry. She said she was told ten men were coming, and that she had already been cast. The figure of ten comes from Hathaway’s recollection; it is not an independently verified production record.

She called the practice “the worst way” to test chemistry. Looking back, she said: “I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it.”
Why she went along with it
Hathaway described a young actor weighing discomfort against the risk of seeming difficult and losing work. She also cautioned against assuming the request was intended to harm or intimidate her: “It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better.”

Did Hathaway name the film?
No. Hathaway did not identify the production or the people involved. In a separate Los Angeles Times report, casting directors Donna Morong, Linda Lamontagne, and Avy Kaufman said they did not recall or had not overseen similar auditions on projects they worked on. Their comments concern their own work; they do not establish which production Hathaway meant or disprove her account.

Hathaway later described a different kind of chemistry exercise for The Idea of You, the film she produced. Actors chose a song they thought their character would use to get her character dancing, then did a short improvisation. Nicholas Galitzine chose a song by Alabama Shakes. The exercise let the actors interact through music, movement, and a brief scene rather than a kissing test.

These are accounts of two particular processes, not evidence of an industry-wide standard or proof about the unnamed earlier audition. The Idea of You is based on Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel; that book is related to the film, not an account of Hathaway’s audition experience.
