Annabhau Sathe (1920–1969) was a Marathi writer, folk poet and activist whose work brought the lives of Dalit, working, farming, women’s and nomadic communities into literature and public performance. His writing and activism joined questions of caste and class rather than treating them as separate struggles.
Who was Annabhau Sathe?
Born Tukaram Bhaurao Sathe in Wadegaon, in present-day Sangli district, on 1 August 1920, Sathe had little formal schooling; the Ministry of Culture’s biographical profile says his education ended at grade four. In 1931, he moved with his family to Mumbai, where he worked as a hawker, porter and mill worker. These experiences help situate his attention to working people, but they should not be treated as a complete explanation of his art.
Sathe died on 18 July 1969. The Government of India’s Ministry of Culture profile gives his birth date and biographical outline; Shivaji University’s study-center timeline records his death date.
How Sathe’s work represented the oppressed
Sathe wrote about communities often pushed to the margins of literary and public life. Shivaji University describes his work as documenting Dalit, farmer, women’s, worker, labouring and nomadic lives, as well as Maharashtra’s social movements. Across its forms, the work carried political, social and cultural awareness.

His commitment is not well captured by asking whether he was simply an Ambedkarite or a Marxist. A 2018 Scroll profile considers that question through the overlap between caste and class. It is a useful interpretive frame, not proof that every reader or scholar settles on one definitive label.
A writer across genres
Sathe’s literary work encompassed novels, short stories, plays, poetry, songs, screenplays, travel writing and ideological writing. The range matters: his engagement with ordinary and oppressed lives was not confined to one literary form.
Rank #2
Counts of his output differ according to how sources group the works. Penguin Random House India’s author biography credits him with 35 novels. The Ministry of Culture profile describes 104 Marathi compositions across novels, screenplays and ballads. Scroll’s 2018 profile gives a more detailed tally: 35 novels, 14 short-story collections, 24 people’s plays, 12 screenplays, two proscenium plays and one travelogue, alongside numerous songs and poems. These figures have different scopes and should not be added together or treated as a settled bibliography.
Fakira and other named works
Fakira, dated to 1959 in the Ministry of Culture profile, is among Sathe’s notable novels. That profile says it received a state literary award in 1961; Penguin Random House India also names it among his works. The publisher’s biography additionally lists Chitra and short fiction including Sultan and Khaprya Chor. Some of Sathe’s works have appeared in Russian, Polish, Czech and several Indian languages, according to the same publisher.

Folk performance and public activism
Sathe’s public work extended beyond the page. The Ministry of Culture profile describes his use of folk drama and lavani songs to galvanize workers and raise public consciousness. Shivaji University records his participation in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement and other social movements. Together, these accounts show a writer who used performance and cultural work as forms of public engagement, as well as producing literary works.

Why Sathe is in the news in 2026
On 5 October 2026, Maharashtra’s Lok Bhavan announced the release of five books concerning Sant Ravidas and Annabhau Sathe. The announcement names the English volume Annabhau Sathe: A Transnational Literary Legacy and its editors. It confirms the release event and title, but does not establish the book’s contents, ISBN, retail status or availability.
