Anita Bryant, the singer and former Florida orange-juice spokesperson who led a successful 1977 campaign to repeal Dade County’s protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation, died at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on December 16, 2024, aged 84. Her family announced her death in January 2025. The Associated Press reported that the family’s obituary did not specify a cause of death; WLRN later reported that her son William Green said she died of cancer.
Who was Anita Bryant?
Bryant was an American singer, commercial spokesperson and, later, a prominent opponent of gay-rights protections. She was named Miss Oklahoma in 1958 and went on to record hit singles including “Till There Was You,” “Paper Roses” and “My Little Corner of the World,” according to the Associated Press.
She received three Grammy nominations: two for best sacred performance and one for best spiritual performance, associated with the album Anita Bryant … Naturally. These were nominations, not wins. By the late 1960s, AP reports, she had joined Bob Hope’s USO tours, sung at the White House and performed at both the 1968 Democratic and Republican national conventions.
How did Anita Bryant become an anti-gay rights activist?
Bryant became nationally associated with opposition to gay-rights protections in 1977, after Dade County, Florida, approved an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. She led Save Our Children, the campaign to repeal that ordinance. Voters repealed it that year, making the campaign a successful immediate political effort, as documented by the AP and Miami Herald.

The outcome did not end the county’s debate over the protection. WLRN reports that Dade County restored the sexual-orientation protection in 1998. The 1977 repeal and the later restoration are distinct points in the ordinance’s history, not a single lasting result.
What was Bryant known for before the campaign?
Before she became a central figure in the repeal campaign, Bryant was widely recognized as a spokesperson for Florida orange juice. The campaign’s familiar slogan was “A day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine.” Her public profile thus joined a successful recording career with nationally visible advertising work.
What consequences followed the 1977 campaign?
The AP reports that Bryant faced criticism, boycotts of products she endorsed and a decline in her entertainment career after the campaign. These were reported effects of the controversy; they do not establish that the campaign alone explains every later change in her career.
Tom Lander, an LGBTQ+ activist and board member of Safe Schools South Florida, summarized the contrast between the vote and its longer-term legacy to the AP: “She won the campaign, but she lost the battle in time.” The county’s 1998 restoration of the protection is one marker of that later reversal. A Miami Herald analysis also connects the campaign’s legacy to more recent parental-rights politics; that is the outlet’s interpretation of a political lineage, rather than proof of a simple, direct cause-and-effect chain.

What is known about Bryant’s death?
The Associated Press reported that Bryant died at home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on December 16, 2024, at 84, and that her family announced the death in January 2025. AP says the family’s obituary did not list a cause. In a later report, WLRN attributed the statement that she died of cancer to her son William Green. Those accounts should be kept separate: the cancer statement was attributed to her son, not presented as a cause named in the family obituary.
Bryant’s family said: “May Anita’s memory and her faith in eternal life through Christ comfort all who embraced her.”
