The acclaim centers on its writing, performances and politically charged storytelling—but reviewers also raised concerns about pacing and exposition. “Modern masterpiece” captures the intensity of the praise, not a unanimous verdict.
What are critics saying about Andor Season 2?
Rotten Tomatoes’ May 1, 2025 early-review roundup collected unusually emphatic praise. Variety critic Alison Herman wrote, “With season 2, Andor cements itself as the gold standard of what modern Star Wars can be.” Brendan Hodges of Next Best Picture called it “not only some of the best Star Wars to come out since Disney took over Lucasfilm, but some of the very best Star Wars period.” Alan Cerny of VitalThrills.com described it as “triumphant” and placed it alongside The Empire Strikes Back, The Last Jedi and Rogue One as top-tier Star Wars. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup attributes each reaction to its critic and publication.
Those are individual critics’ judgments, not proof of consensus. A separate snapshot from Metacritic’s season page showed a 92 Metascore from 34 critic reviews when accessed October 7, 2026, labeled “Universal Acclaim.” Aggregator scores and review counts can change as reviews are added or updated. What is earning the praise?
Writing and political urgency
Reviewers singled out the season’s writing and its sustained attention to power, resistance and the costs of political action. The show’s political focus is not a detour from its Star Wars setting; it is central to how the story examines the formation of a rebellion. The Associated Press’ May 12, 2025 coverage of the ending also noted the series’ engagement with trauma and humanity as it moves toward Rogue One. The AP’s report provides context on that conclusion.

The early acclaim also reflects the strength of the performances and the way the season gives personal stakes to a large political conflict. For many of the quoted critics, the result is not merely a strong television season but a high point for Star Wars storytelling.
A purposeful path to Rogue One
Season 2 is the concluding season, comprising 12 episodes released in 2025. Its story leads into Rogue One, giving the series a defined endpoint within the larger franchise. That connection rewards viewers familiar with the film, while the season’s political and character-focused approach gives the ending its own dramatic weight. Metacritic’s series listing identifies the 2025 season as 12 episodes; the AP’s ending coverage discusses its connection to the film.

What are the reservations?
The positive reception does not mean every reviewer thought the season’s choices worked equally well. The disagreements are especially useful for setting expectations if you prefer brisk, pulpy adventure over slower political storytelling.
- Pacing: Rotten Tomatoes’ season page includes a review that criticizes a slow early side story. The season page includes the review alongside other responses.
- Exposition: A Slate review listed on Metacritic argues that the final episode block carries a significant exposition burden.
- Scale and tone: The same Slate review suggests that the season’s sprawling social portrait can sometimes undercut pulp storytelling. Viewers who value that broad political texture may see it as a strength; those seeking a more direct adventure may find it dilutes the momentum.
These criticisms qualify the praise rather than overturn it: the central split is whether the season’s expansive political design deepens the Star Wars story or slows its forward drive.

Is Season 2 better than Season 1?
Some early reviewers said the creative team had outdone Season 1, but that is a critical opinion rather than a measurable result. Season 2 continues the first season’s political and character-led approach and carries it toward the events of Rogue One. Whether it improves on Season 1 depends on what you value most: the scale and resolution of the concluding story, or the momentum and discovery of the earlier season. The AP’s account of the ending offers additional context for how the story reaches its endpoint.
