Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. Andy Garcia’s Gallino makes Landman’s oil and cartel stories matter to each other: his money backs both M-Tex’s offshore ambitions and Tommy Norris’s new company, while his threats make those deals personal. The season does not officially declare that this is what the show has been missing. But Gallino’s arc suggests a compelling answer: Landman is strongest when the mechanics of the oil business stay tied to the crime and family consequences surrounding them.
How Gallino connects the oil business to the crime story
At the start of Season 2, Monty Miller is dead, Cami takes control of M-Tex, and Tommy becomes president while inheriting the consequences of Monty’s decisions. Paramount+’s official season recap says Monty had promised a Gulf of Mexico gas well but instead used client funds to finance Texas oil wells. That financial problem gives the company’s business decisions real stakes from the outset.

Gallino, played by Garcia, enters that world under the name Dan Morrell, presenting himself to Cami as a potential investor. She accepts his money for an offshore drilling project. Even after Tommy tells her Morrell is Gallino, the arrangement remains in place, according to the Paramount+ recap. The result is more than a crime figure lurking near the oil plot: Gallino’s capital is part of the business itself.
Garcia has discussed Gallino’s secret partnership with Cooper in an interview with TV Insider. That connection adds another route between the characters, but the available interview material does not establish one definitive motive for Gallino. His importance is clearer in what his involvement does to the story: it makes a financing decision carry criminal and personal risk.

Why the Season 2 finale makes the connection harder to ignore
In the finale, Cami fires Tommy. At the same time, Tommy has to confront the criminal case facing Cooper. He responds by securing financing and starting CTT Oil Exploration and Cattle, with Gallino as its backer. TV Insider’s finale coverage and Ali Larter interview describe Tommy’s departure from M-Tex and the new venture.
That ending puts the show’s two engines into one arrangement: Tommy is trying to build an oil company, but its financial foundation comes from a man whose money carries a threat. TV Insider’s Season 3 outlook quotes Gallino telling Tommy, “If you lose this, and you try to f*** me in any way, the thing you love the most, that’s the first thing I’ll take.” This is Gallino’s dialogue, not a statement by Garcia about the series.

The threat turns a business gamble into a danger that can reach beyond the balance sheet. That is the productive tension in Garcia’s arc: the cartel story is not simply an interruption to oil operations; it can shape who funds them, who makes decisions, and what failure might cost.
What the arc suggests is missing from Landman
The word “officially” in the supplied title overstates what the available sources establish. Neither the cited interviews nor the post-finale coverage reports that a creator or cast member officially identified a missing element in the series. The argument here is an interpretation of the story, not a confirmed production statement.
Rank #3
That interpretation is that Landman needs to sustain the link between its industrial premise and its crime and family stakes. If oil-company decisions recede for long stretches, the criminal pressure can feel like a separate plot rather than a force changing the way the business works. Gallino’s arc shows how the two can reinforce each other: capital enables exploration, but the source of that capital makes the venture dangerous.
This is not just a question of giving Garcia more screen time. The sharper test is whether the show continues to let money, drilling decisions, criminal leverage, and consequences for Tommy’s people operate as parts of the same story. The finale sets that possibility up; it does not yet show how the new company will fare.

What remains unresolved after the finale
Paramount+’s recap and TV Insider’s Season 3 outlook leave several outcomes open. CTT’s success is unknown, as is Cami’s response to a new competitor and how Tommy will manage Gallino’s threat. Those are unresolved plot questions, not confirmed Season 3 events.
These open threads give the next season a clear opportunity: make the oil venture’s practical decisions drive the crime story, and let that pressure produce consequences for the people around Tommy. Whether the series follows through remains to be seen.
