Amandla Stenberg said in 2024 that The Acolyte’s cancellation was “not a huge shock” to her. She linked her reaction to what she described as vitriol and prejudice directed at the cast from the time the series was announced. Her explanation described the atmosphere around the show; it did not establish why Disney chose to cancel it.
What Amandla Stenberg said about the cancellation
Stenberg played twins Osha and Mae in The Acolyte. In an Instagram post or video, as reported by PinkNews, she said: “I’m gonna be transparent and say it’s not a huge shock for me.” The statement was reported in August 2024, after the cancellation was announced.

IGN reproduced a longer version of Stenberg’s remarks, in which she said the cast had faced “a rampage of vitriol” since the show was announced, when it was “still just a concept and no one had even seen it.” She also described the hostility as involving hyper-conservative bigotry and prejudice. These were Stenberg’s characterizations of the reaction surrounding the series, not an independently measured account of audience opinion.
What is known about why the series was canceled
The cancellation was announced in August 2024. A contemporary Gamereactor report said low viewership was the reason cited by Disney, but the available reporting does not provide a detailed official rationale or a complete set of audience figures. Stenberg’s account of backlash and the report about viewership should therefore be kept separate: the evidence does not show that online hostility caused the cancellation.

Why the trailer number did not settle the audience question
Lucasfilm reported that The Acolyte trailer received 51.3 million views in its first 24 hours in March 2024, calling it a digital-only record for a Lucasfilm Disney+ series at the time. That figure measured trailer views, not people who watched episodes, completed the series, or remained subscribed. It cannot by itself explain the cancellation or be used as a substitute for series viewership data.
What The Acolyte was about
Lucasfilm described The Acolyte as a mystery set in the High Republic era. It premiered June 4, 2024, and its official series page listed a TV-14 rating. The premise followed an investigation into a crime spree that brought a Jedi Master into conflict with a dangerous warrior from his past.

Related reading from the series
For readers interested in more context from the same period, Lucasfilm announced The Acolyte: Wayseeker by Justina Ireland, an adult novel focused on Vernestra Rwoh and set roughly 20 years before the show. It is a prequel rather than a continuation of the canceled series. Lucasfilm also announced The Acolyte Visual Guide from DK as a reference book about the show. Current editions and availability may vary.
