Amanda Seyfried said she hopes Sophie will sing “Mamma Mia” if the franchise makes a third film. In an October 2024 interview, she called it her dream to perform the song—one she said is her favorite and her daughter’s, too. That was a wish, not confirmation that a third film is in production or scheduled.
What Amanda Seyfried said
Entertainment Weekly reported on October 9, 2024, that Seyfried discussed the idea during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. Asked which song she would want to duet on with Sabrina Carpenter, Seyfried answered: “My dream in general is to sing ‘Mamma Mia,’ because I have not.” She added, “I think Sophie needs a shot because that is my favorite song.” Read the interview report.

Seyfried plays Sophie, the central young character in the 2008 film. Her idea is that Sophie should get her own turn with the title song in a potential third installment.
Who sings “Mamma Mia” in the existing films?
| Film | Who performs the song | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Mamma Mia! (2008) | Meryl Streep as Donna | Donna performs the title song when her former suitors arrive. |
| Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) | Lily James as younger Donna, with Jessica Keenan Wynn as Tanya and Alexa Davies as Rosie | The younger versions of the three friends perform it together. |
The sequel is based on the original musical and features songs by ABBA. Universal Pictures credits Catherine Johnson as the musical’s writer, Judy Craymer as its original conceiver, and Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for its music and lyrics. Universal Pictures’ film page lists the sequel cast, including Seyfried.

Will Amanda Seyfried sing it in Mamma Mia 3?
Her comments do not establish that she will. The October 2024 report describes a hypothetical third film and records Seyfried’s hope for Sophie; it does not confirm a greenlight, production, casting decision, or release date. The distinction matters: she has expressed interest in singing the song, but that is not an announcement about a film.
