Louis Partridge is an English actor best known for playing Viscount Tewkesbury in the Enola Holmes films. He and Olivia Rodrigo were publicly linked from 2023 and appeared together into 2025. Reports published in June and July 2026 say they split in December 2025, but the sources cited here do not include a direct breakup confirmation from either of them.
The “golden retriever” phrase comes from Partridge’s playful description of his own romantic temperament in an October 2024 interview. It is not a confirmed description of his behavior with Rodrigo.

Who is Louis Partridge?
Louis Partridge is an English actor whose breakout role was Viscount Tewkesbury in the Enola Holmes films. Why is he called Olivia Rodrigo’s “golden retriever” boyfriend?
The nickname traces to Partridge’s own comparison in an October 11, 2024 ELLE interview. Asked about his romantic temperament, he said: “The way I would characterize it is like a Golden Retriever and a black cat. I can imagine being happy sitting and catching a Frisbee.” He was describing a relationship dynamic in general, not giving a verified account of how he and Rodrigo acted together. There is a separate golden-retriever comparison that can be easy to confuse with this one. In a 2025 interview, Partridge used the phrase to describe George Wickham, the fictional character he played—not himself or his relationship with Rodrigo. Town & Country’s interview makes that context clear.
Are Louis Partridge and Olivia Rodrigo still dating?
They were first publicly linked in 2023 and appeared together at events in the following years. ELLE says they made their red-carpet debut at the Venice premiere of Disclaimer; they were also seen together at the 2024 Grammys. In June 2025, Partridge publicly praised Rodrigo’s Glastonbury performance, and the two exchanged affectionate Instagram comments, according to ELLE’s timeline.

Later coverage reports a split in December 2025. El País reported the breakup in June 2026, and Aftonbladet reported it in July 2026. These are media reports rather than direct confirmation by Rodrigo or Partridge. ELLE’s June 2026 update, meanwhile, said neither had confirmed a breakup at that point. The most accurate wording is therefore that they were reported to have split, not that either publicly announced it.
Did Olivia Rodrigo write “So American” about Louis Partridge?
Partridge did not confirm that the song is about him. When asked about “So American” in the October 2024 ELLE interview, he replied: “Not my song, not my place. So I wouldn’t know.” Rodrigo has also said she does not discuss her personal life publicly and that listeners may look to the music to infer things, while cautioning that “it’s just a song at the end of the day.” ELLE’s account reports Partridge’s response and Rodrigo’s remarks from a June 2026 Dazed interview. Without a direct confirmation, tying the song to a specific person remains interpretation.

The public record consists mainly of appearances, social-media exchanges and comments reported by entertainment outlets. Those establish that Rodrigo and Partridge were publicly associated and appeared together; they do not establish private details or validate the “golden retriever” metaphor as a description of their relationship. Rodrigo has described her reluctance to discuss private life in public, and British Vogue’s 2026 interview likewise focuses on her songwriting and reflections rather than confirming that particular songs document Partridge or their relationship.
