What Carol Baum said about Sydney Sweeney
At a public discussion after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers in Pleasantville, New York, producer Carol Baum spoke about Sweeney and the romantic comedy Anyone But You. Sky News reported that film critic Janet Maslin was with Baum at the event.
Baum said she did not understand Sweeney’s popularity and called Anyone But You “unwatchable.” She also said of Sweeney: “She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?” These were Baum’s opinions, not established facts about Sweeney or her acting. Sky News reported the remarks and the response from Sweeney’s representative.
What Sweeney’s representative said
In a written statement reported on April 17, 2024, Sweeney’s representative said: “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman.” The representative added: “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful.” The statement came from Sweeney’s representative; the cited reports do not present it as a direct statement from Sweeney.

What appeared in Sweeney’s Instagram post
On April 22, PerthNow reported that Sweeney had shared a vacation slideshow captioned “good times and tan lines.” One slide showed a sweater with the phrase “Sorry for having great t**s.” The outlet connected the post to Baum’s criticism, and coverage widely treated it as an apparent response. That interpretation should not be mistaken for confirmation: the cited reporting does not establish that Sweeney explicitly explained why she posted the image.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Baum later told TMZ she regretted making the remarks and wished she had not said them. That reporting supports saying she expressed regret; it does not establish that she apologized directly to Sweeney. Read the Los Angeles Times report on Baum’s regret.
