What happened to Baldwin’s case
Baldwin faced an involuntary-manslaughter case arising from the October 2021 shooting on the Rust set, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. On July 12, 2024, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case with prejudice. CBS/AP reported that the judge found late disclosure of ammunition evidence had impaired the fairness of the proceedings. As CBS/AP quoted Sommer: “The late discovery of this evidence during trial has impeded the effective use of evidence in such a way that it has impacted the fundamental fairness of the proceedings.”
In a December 23, 2024 filing, Special Prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey withdrew the state’s notice of appeal. The filing recounted the dismissal and set out the prosecution’s position that the ammunition was not material and that the defense knew about it earlier. Those are the prosecution’s assertions, not the judge’s findings.
