Major spoilers ahead for “Lorraine’s Story,” including discussion of child abduction and death.
The Season 2 premiere of FOX’s crime anthology Accused turns a missing-child case into a question of belief and ethics: is Lorraine Howell a genuine psychic trying to help, or a fraud taking advantage of a family’s grief? The episode’s controversy is an interpretive tension at the heart of its story, not a verified real-world dispute.

What is Accused season 2 episode 1 about?
“Lorraine’s Story” follows Lorraine Howell, played by Felicity Huffman, a woman who claims to be a psychic medium. She becomes involved with parents desperate to find their missing son. William H. Macy plays Raymond. The couple’s search gives Lorraine’s claimed abilities an urgent purpose—and makes the question of her motives harder to separate from the hope she offers.
The episode’s central conflict is not simply whether a psychic can identify what happened. It asks what it means to offer certainty to people in crisis when that certainty may be impossible to verify. Lorraine may want to help; the prosecution’s fraud theory puts that intention under suspicion. Viewers are left to weigh her credibility and conduct against the vulnerability of the parents she encounters.

Is Lorraine really psychic?
The premiere invites that question but does not make it a simple test of belief. Its emotional stakes come from the gap between what the parents need and what Lorraine can credibly provide. If her claims are false, even a sincere desire to help would not erase the harm of exploiting their hope. If she believes she can help, that still leaves the ethical question of how she handles a family’s grief.
That ambiguity is the source of the episode’s controversy. Rather than treating “psychic” as a settled fact, the story places the claim beside a prosecution theory of fraud and asks the audience to judge Lorraine’s actions. The missing-child storyline also carries a serious emotional cost: this is a drama about abduction and death, not a light mystery about paranormal powers.

How the premiere uses Accused’s anthology format
Accused is structured as an anthology, with each episode presenting a different crime, city and cast. Its familiar device is to begin in court with the defendant, then use flashbacks to tell the story from that person’s point of view. The format shifts the emphasis from solving a continuing detective case to examining how a person arrived at a criminal accusation.
For “Lorraine’s Story,” that structure makes the courtroom frame part of the suspense: viewers know a prosecution is underway before they know the full circumstances. The flashbacks then supply context while keeping Lorraine’s perspective central. The result is a self-contained moral puzzle, with the audience considering both the alleged fraud and the family’s desperate search.

What critics said about the season opener
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page listed two critic reviews. TV Fanatic’s Jasmine Blu rated the episode 4/5 and called it “An unexpectedly quieter start to the season.” CBR’s Brittany Frederick rated it 9/10 and said it “provides a gut-wrenching dilemma.” Together, the responses point to a useful tension in the premiere’s reception: a restrained opening can still carry a forceful emotional predicament. Two reviews are a limited sample, not evidence of broad critical consensus.
The creators described Season 2 as an effort to push further. In an interview published by TheWrap on October 9, 2024, series developer Howard Gordon said, “Honestly, we just wanted to be better,” and, “We’re testing the limits.” Showrunner Daniel Pearle said, “We were bolder this year in terms of pushing genre of different episodes.” Those remarks express the season’s stated ambition; they do not, on their own, settle how successfully this particular episode meets it.
