In February 2022, Abbie Chatfield used a topless Instagram image—her nipples covered with star emojis—to challenge what she saw as gendered rules about nudity and to encourage women to “free the nipple.” The account was reported at the time by So Dramatic!; it is not a new 2026 post, and that report does not establish whether the image is still available.
What did Abbie Chatfield post?
So Dramatic! reported on February 11, 2022, that Chatfield had shared a topless image on Instagram with star emojis obscuring her nipples. The outlet presented the post as a response to Instagram’s treatment of topless images and linked to the original post. Its report said the image had not been removed as of publication; that was a snapshot of its status then, not confirmation of its current availability.
According to the outlet’s reproduction of her caption, Chatfield wrote, “Nipples do NOT need to be sexualised,” and asked Instagram, “Can IG please allow nipples?” The quotations are reported post language, not independently verified against a preserved copy of the original.
Why did she say she went topless?
In the caption reproduced by So Dramatic!, Chatfield listed personal reasons: swimming without a top, avoiding sand in a bikini top, avoiding paparazzi photographs framed as “wardrobe malfunction” images, dealing with heat, feeling free and starting conversations. She also objected to the sexualization of nipples. These were her stated reasons for her own choice, not advice or a recommendation for others.

How did the later Meta Oversight Board debate differ?
In January 2023, Meta’s Oversight Board recommended that Meta set clearer criteria for adult nudity that were consistent with international human rights standards. The Guardian reported that the recommendation followed Meta’s removal and subsequent restoration of two posts by a transgender and nonbinary couple. That case concerned the board’s review of Meta’s adult-nudity standard; it was separate from Chatfield’s 2022 Instagram post.
The Guardian quoted Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, saying, “Context is everything, and algorithms are terrible at context.” The remark points to a broader moderation challenge: a platform may have to distinguish the meaning and context of an image, not simply detect exposed skin. It does not establish how Instagram handled Chatfield’s specific post beyond what So Dramatic! reported at the time.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
- Established: So Dramatic!’s February 2022 account described a topless image with star emojis and reported Chatfield’s criticism of nipple sexualization and Instagram’s rules.
- Established: The Oversight Board made a recommendation in 2023 after a different case involving posts by a transgender and nonbinary couple.
- Not established by these reports: whether Meta adopted that recommendation, what Instagram’s current rules are, or whether Chatfield’s original post remains available.
The distinction matters: a celebrity’s protest post is not the same thing as a platform policy decision, and a board recommendation is not proof that a policy changed or that enforcement changed in practice.
