Directed by Geetika Narang Abbasi and co-produced with longtime Meena Kumari fan Maanik Mahna, it sets out to look beyond the star’s familiar “tragedy queen” image—through her screen persona, personal life, poetry and the devotion of one admirer. Its completion and release status have not been established by the available reporting.
What is the Mahjabeen documentary?
Mahjabeen, named for Meena Kumari’s birth name, is a biographical non-fiction documentary directed by Geetika Narang Abbasi and co-produced by Abbasi and Maanik Mahna. In a report published April 2, 2025, Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath described it as a work in progress: the filmmakers had presented a raw, rough cut at the InTheWorks Lab during Cinevesture in Chandigarh, held March 20–23, 2025. The report does not establish that the film was completed, acquired, scheduled for release or made available to watch.
The project suits Abbasi’s interest in cinema examining cinema. Her earlier documentary, Urf (2022), focused on Hindi film-star lookalikes. She told Scroll, “Cinema on cinema is my favourite genre.” For Mahjabeen, she described an intention to examine both Kumari’s public image and the effect of her personal life, rather than treating stardom as the whole story.

Why the film is also a fan’s journey
Mahna’s long-standing fascination with Kumari is part of the documentary’s point of view, not simply background to a conventional biography. The project began to take shape after he met Kumari’s niece, Shahina Rana, in Amritsar. Mahna had been looking for a director for about a year when he approached Abbasi after reading Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai: Urdu Memoirs of Cinema Legends, a collection written by her husband, Yasir Abbasi. Ramnath reports that the book’s first essay, by Nargis, is about Meena Kumari.
Abbasi initially hesitated to take on a film about such a major icon. After meeting Mahna, she found a compelling story in the admirer himself, describing the project as potentially “a Meena Kumari fan’s journey.” That choice creates a productive tension: a documentary shaped by an intensely invested fan must make room for interpretations beyond his own. Abbasi acknowledged that “There is a very thin line in doing that because there is a super-fan in the film,” and said the filmmakers were still working through that balance.

Who appears in the documentary?
According to the Scroll report, the filmmakers interviewed people who knew Kumari, worked with her or had another personal connection to her. Abbasi said they favored connected witnesses over experts. Those named include her niece Shahina Rana and Rana’s daughter, Tina Singh-Jain, as well as co-actors Honey Irani and Daisy Irani, Farida Jalal and Sachin Pilgaonkar. The reporting identifies these participants but does not provide a complete interview list or describe the film’s final edit.
Beyond the “tragedy queen” image
Kumari’s widely publicized relationships, her turbulent marriage to Pakeezah director Kamal Amrohi, alcoholism and early death have often dominated accounts of her life. The filmmakers’ stated ambition is to widen that frame, not to claim that a rough cut had already achieved it. Abbasi said she sees Kumari as “way more than being a tragedy queen” and also as a rebel. Mahna emphasizes her writing and poetry; he described her as someone who “broke into a male domain of poetry.” These are the filmmakers’ interpretations of Kumari, rather than conclusions established by the report as neutral biography.

The project’s approach is not presented as a standard biopic or a tribute without complication. Abbasi’s stated aim is to consider the screen persona alongside the personal life, while the fan-centered perspective raises questions about admiration and interpretation. The March 2025 rough cut was still being shaped, so the report cannot show how the finished film ultimately handles those tensions.
Meena Kumari’s poetry and I Write I Recite
Poetry is a meaningful part of Mahna’s connection to Kumari. The Scroll report says his mother gave him a record of I Write I Recite, an album of poems narrated by Kumari. Mahna recalled, “I learnt Urdu to understand her poems.” The report establishes the album’s place in his story, but not a currently available edition, format or seller listing. It likewise mentions the memoir anthology that drew Mahna’s attention without establishing a particular current edition.

What is known about the documentary’s release?
The verified production snapshot is from March and April 2025: a rough cut was presented at Cinevesture’s InTheWorks Lab, and the film was still in editing when Scroll published its report on April 2. That account describes the lab as offering mentorship and connections with investors; it does not say the project received financing, secured a distributor or set a release date. No later completion, screening or viewing availability is established in that reporting, so Mahjabeen should not be described as released or available to stream on its basis.
