Rotten Tomatoes listed an 86% Tomatometer score from 288 critic reviews, while Metacritic listed a 68/100 Metascore from 53 reviews—both figures accessed October 7, 2026. Reviewers often praise Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and the film’s emotional focus; some find it less frightening or more familiar than its predecessors.
What the review scores say
The two major aggregators point in the same broad direction—positive overall—but their numbers are not directly interchangeable. Rotten Tomatoes measures the share of reviews classified as positive, while Metacritic aggregates critics’ scores into a weighted rating.

These are changing aggregator snapshots, not a record of what critics thought on the film’s opening day. Rotten Tomatoes’ early-review roundup, updated September 11, 2024, described a film that might be less scary or epic than some viewers expected but succeeds as character drama.
What critics praise—and what divides them
Performances and emotional stakes
Reviews frequently single out Nyong’o and Quinn. Nyong’o plays Samira, and Quinn plays Eric; their performances help give the prequel a human center amid the invasion. The film’s emphasis on character and feeling is a central part of its appeal, rather than a detour from its premise.

- Director: Michael Sarnoski
Director and screenwriter Michael Sarnoski has described the franchise as a setting that can accommodate different human stories: “One of the great things about the Quiet Place universe is that you have this sort of fundamental creature, and beyond that, you can explore any human story you want to in that world.” TIME attributed the statement to Sarnoski speaking to IndieWire.
Less terror, more intimacy
The same shift in emphasis is a point of disagreement. Viewers looking primarily for relentless scares, a larger action spectacle, or a major escalation from the earlier films may find Day One comparatively familiar or restrained. Others may value its character-centered approach. The critical response is favorable overall, not unanimous agreement that this is the series’ scariest or most expansive entry.

What the film is about
This 2024 horror, science-fiction, and mystery-thriller prequel follows the first day of the alien invasion in New York City. Samira, accompanied by her cat Frodo, encounters Eric as the city descends into crisis. Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff also star.
Michael Sarnoski directed and wrote the screenplay. The story is by John Krasinski and Sarnoski, based on characters created by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. Paramount lists the film as PG-13 for terror and violent content/bloody images; that explanation is not a complete content-warning list. Its runtime is 1 hour 40 minutes.

Is it worth watching?
If you are interested in the franchise’s world and want a more intimate story built around two characters’ experience of the invasion, the reviews suggest A Quiet Place: Day One is a promising choice. If your priority is maximum suspense or a large-scale action follow-up, the reservations critics raised are worth bearing in mind. The scores support “encouraging” rather than universal acclaim.
