But the available records do not establish which effort was “biggest” by money or impact—and Save the Children explicitly refuted a widely circulated claim that he gave millions to its Nepal earthquake response.
What “biggest” can—and cannot—mean here
The record shows several different kinds of contribution: sustained advocacy as an ambassador, a public appeal for emergency relief, and donations whose amounts were not disclosed. Those cannot be ranked fairly against one another without comparable figures for money given, funds raised, services delivered, or people reached. The clearest documented thread is Ronaldo’s work with Save the Children on children’s health and wellbeing.
The evidence also differs in strength. Save the Children’s annual report and statements document the ambassador role and correct the Nepal claim; reports about donations for Rohingya children and children affected by the war in Syria describe their purpose but do not disclose amounts.
Save the Children: child health advocacy
Save the Children’s 2013 annual report says Ronaldo became a Global Artist Ambassador in 2012. It describes his work as focused on fighting child hunger and obesity and promoting physical activity and healthy eating. The organisation’s Italian-language announcement likewise described an ambassador role focused on child malnutrition and infant and child nutrition.
#1 Best Overall
The annual report says the Twitter announcement of his commitment generated 16.5 million impressions. That figure measures the announcement’s reach; it is not a donation total, money raised, or a count of children helped through Ronaldo’s efforts. Separately, Save the Children reported that 14.4 million children benefited from its hunger programmes in 2013, an organisation-wide result that should not be attributed to Ronaldo.
Nepal earthquake: a public appeal, not a verified mega-donation
After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Ronaldo urged followers to support Save the Children’s relief work. The charity thanked him for raising awareness, but said reports that he had donated to its emergency response were false. The Guardian reported the charity’s statement on May 14, 2015: “The latest information on the donation of Cristiano Ronaldo to the emergency response of Save the Children in Nepal is false.”
Rank #2
Media reports attached different figures to the rumour. None should be presented as Ronaldo’s actual donation. The substantiated contribution described here is advocacy for the appeal, not the alleged multi-million-dollar gift.
Rohingya children in Cox’s Bazar
A Save the Children announcement distributed by PR Newswire says Ronaldo supported the organisation’s response to the Rohingya humanitarian crisis with a donation for child-friendly spaces in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. These spaces give children a safe place to play and socialise and support their recovery amid crisis. The announcement does not state the donation amount, so it cannot be compared by size with other efforts.

Children and families affected by the war in Syria
Spanish outlet AS reported in December 2016 that Ronaldo made a donation to Save the Children for children and families affected by the war in Syria. According to the report’s account of the charity’s statement, the amount was undisclosed at his request. The funds were intended to support food, clothing, emergency medical care, and psychological support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess the record
- Contribution type: The ambassador role involved advocacy on child health; the Nepal episode was a public appeal; the Rohingya and Syria reports describe donations.
- Geography and beneficiaries: The documented examples concern children facing nutrition challenges, Rohingya children in Bangladesh, children and families affected by war in Syria, and earthquake-affected communities in Nepal.
- What is measurable: The 16.5 million figure is announcement impressions. The cited accounts do not provide comparable donation totals, funds raised, or beneficiary counts for Ronaldo’s individual contributions.
- What the evidence does not support: A definitive ranking of his largest ventures by dollars or impact, or treating the Nepal rumour as fact.
This is a historical account based on the cited reports. It does not establish whether Ronaldo currently holds an active role with Save the Children or whether any of the described appeals remain open.
