The original Ultraman is an alien from Nebula M78’s Land of Light who merges his life with human SSSP member Shin Hayata and remains on Earth to protect it. His profile lists him at 40 meters tall, with the Spacium Beam as his signature attack.
Who is Ultraman?
Tsuburaya Productions’ official profile describes Ultraman as an alien of justice and a member of the Inter Galactic Defense Force from Nebula M78’s Land of Light. He comes to Earth pursuing Space Monster Bemular, which escaped while being escorted to the Monster Graveyard. During the pursuit, Ultraman collides with SSSP member Shin Hayata and merges his life with Hayata’s. He then decides to stay and fight for peace on Earth. Tsuburaya Productions’ Ultraman profile calls the hero “an alien of justice” and outlines this origin.
What is Ultraman’s real name?
The official profile identifies him as Ultraman; it does not provide a separate personal name. Hayata is the human with whom Ultraman merges his life, not another name for the alien.
How does Hayata become Ultraman?
Hayata does not simply put on a costume: after their collision, the alien and SSSP member merge their lives. The profile says Ultraman chooses to remain on Earth to defend it. That is the original series’ premise; it should not be assumed to describe every later Ultra hero’s relationship with a human.

How tall is Ultraman, and what is the Spacium Beam?
The original character’s official specifications give him a height of 40 meters and a weight of 35,000 metric tonnes. These are fictional character measurements, not measurements of a performer or production prop. His special move is the Spacium Beam, released with his arms crossed. The giant-hero scale is central to the character’s appeal, but transformation and human-host rules vary across the wider franchise.
When did the Ultraman series begin?
Fields Corporation’s 2013 annual report dates the series’ beginning as a Tsuburaya Productions television series to 1966. Its chronology lists Ultra Q in January 1966, Ultraman in July 1966, and Ultra Seven in October 1967. Later milestones in that report include The Return of Ultraman (1971), Ultraman Tiga (1996), Ultraman Dyna (1997), and Ultraman Gaia (1998). This is a selective timeline from the 2013 Fields Corporation annual report, not a complete release list.

Is Ultraman a character or a franchise?
It can mean either, so context matters. The original Ultraman is the hero of the 1966 series; the Ultra Series is the wider franchise, with many distinct heroes and productions. Tsuburaya Productions’ hero encyclopedia lists characters including Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Jack, Tiga, Zero, Blazar, Arc, Omega, and Teo. A roster does not mean these characters share one origin or appear in a single continuous story.

The international franchise overview describes material across live action, animation, comics, and manga. It also reflects the franchise’s broader cultural reach, but its release-oriented descriptions are not a dependable guide to what is newest today. Think of the franchise in three broad layers:
- The original hero: Ultraman and the 1966 television series.
- Other Ultra heroes: subsequent series centered on distinct characters, rather than one protagonist continuing unchanged.
- Other formats: films, animation, comics and manga, as well as toys and events.
Because the characters and series differ, there is no single viewing order established by these sources. A newcomer can start with the original series to see the foundational hero, or choose a particular later series on its own terms; a complete franchise guide would need to assess each entry separately.

These products are optional collectibles, not a prerequisite for understanding the series.
