Why and When Marilyn Monroe Changed Her Name From Norma Jeane

Norma Jeane began using Marilyn Monroe as a screen name in 1946, but legally changed her name in 1956. The studio wanted a more marketable star identity; the name drew on Marilyn Miller and Monroe’s maternal family.

Norma Jeane began using Marilyn Monroe as her professional screen name in 1946, as she started her career at 20th Century Fox. The studio wanted a name it considered more marketable for a film star. She did not legally become Marilyn Monroe until February 23, 1956—about a decade later.

Why did Norma Jeane adopt a new name?

The name change began as a studio branding decision, not evidence that Norma Jeane rejected her birth name. PBS describes Fox as believing “Norma Jeane” did not sound sufficiently like a film star, while a Fox memo cataloged by Christie’s characterized her original name as not commercial enough. The goal was to create a screen identity the studio thought would work better with audiences.

Accounts commonly credit Fox casting director Ben Lyon with suggesting “Marilyn,” reportedly because she reminded him of actress Marilyn Miller. “Monroe” came from Norma Jeane’s maternal family. Sources differ on exactly who proposed it and how the conversation unfolded, but several accounts say Norma Jeane wanted to keep that family name.

How did the name come together?

PBS’s account connects “Marilyn” to Marilyn Miller and “Monroe” to the surname of Norma Jeane’s maternal grandmother. TIME, drawing on biographer Donald Spoto, says Lyon proposed Marilyn and Norma Jeane suggested Monroe, another surname on her mother’s side. A 1999 Los Angeles Times letter also credits Lyon with Marilyn and Norma Jeane with Monroe, while noting that agency head Emmeline Snively encouraged her to consider a screen name.

The Saturday Evening Post reproduces Monroe’s recollection: “When all the talk began about renaming me, I asked them please could I keep my mother’s maiden name, which was Monroe; so the choice was whether to call me Jean Monroe or Marilyn Monroe, and Marilyn won.” This is a recollection as reproduced by the publication, not a contemporaneous transcript.

When did she start using Marilyn Monroe?

PBS reports that Norma Jeane signed a six-month contract with Fox on August 24, 1946. TIME describes the search for a screen name as beginning around the time of her Fox contract. Christie’s catalogs a Fox internal memo dated December 3, 1946, advising the publicity department that Norma Jeane Dougherty’s name had been changed to Marilyn Monroe.

These dates describe different points in the process: the contract and name discussions began around August, while the December memo recorded the change for the studio’s publicity department. The available accounts do not establish one single moment when every step occurred.

When did Marilyn Monroe legally change her name?

She legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe on February 23, 1956, according to TIME. That legal change was distinct from adopting the name professionally in 1946. Calling 1946 the year she legally changed her name conflates the screen-name transition with the later legal one.
