There is no official best-to-worst order for the Enterprise ships; this ranking weighs each design’s silhouette, the stories attached to it, its legacy, and how well it reflects its era. It covers 11 prime-timeline designs, counting the major NCC-1701 refit separately, including the NX-01 and future Enterprise-J, and excluding Kelvin-timeline counterparts.

How this ranking works

The order is an editorial judgment, not a Starfleet or franchise ranking. A striking profile matters, but so do the ship’s defining stories, what those stories change, and whether the design feels right for its period. Ships with brief or less-developed screen histories rank lower here even when their concepts are intriguing.

The original NCC-1701 and its refit count as separate designs because the refit substantially changed the ship’s appearance for the feature-film era. The prime-timeline list runs from the NX-01 to the Enterprise-J; Kelvin-timeline versions are outside the scope.

The 11 Enterprises, ranked

1. Original NCC-1701

The original Enterprise earns the top spot through the clarity of its design and the breadth of its legacy. Its saucer, secondary hull, and paired nacelles create a silhouette that is immediately legible and still defines what many viewers picture when they hear “starship.” Its importance is not just visual: it established the template against which later Enterprises could signal continuity or change.

  • Large Display Model: Built size is an impressive 35 inches long, perfect for showcasing in your collection.

StarTrek.com’s catalog associates the ship with Robert April, Christopher Pike, and James T. Kirk, and lists appearances across The Original Series, The Animated Series, films, Discovery, Short Treks, and Strange New Worlds. That long screen life makes it the franchise’s most durable design reference. StarTrek.com’s Enterprise catalog.

2. NCC-1701 refit

The refit keeps the original’s recognizable arrangement but sharpens and modernizes it for the films. Andrew Probert’s changes to the nacelles, saucer, and stardrive give the ship a more sculpted, cohesive profile without severing its visual link to the earlier vessel. It is a particularly effective bridge between television-era familiarity and cinematic scale.

Space.com’s design retrospective calls the refit arguably the most iconic Enterprise. That is the publication’s critical assessment, not an official verdict; its high placement here reflects how successfully the redesign both honors and reinterprets the original. Space.com’s starship design retrospective.

3. NCC-1701-D

The Enterprise-D makes the flagship feel like a home as well as a vessel. Its broad, smooth saucer and integrated profile communicate the more settled, expansive Federation of The Next Generation. The design is less lean than the original or refit, but that scale suits stories built around a large crew and sustained exploration.

Its legacy extends well beyond its first series. StarTrek.com’s catalog identifies Jean-Luc Picard as its captain and lists The Next Generation, Generations, and Picard. The official flagship overview describes its later return: by 2401, its restored saucer was paired with the Syracuse secondary hull, bringing the ship back into the Borg conflict. The comeback gives the design a rare second act and strengthens its place among the franchise’s defining ships. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

4. Enterprise NX-01

The NX-01 ranks high for what it means to the larger history, even if its utilitarian appearance is a marked departure from the more familiar Federation flagships. Its design looks like an early step rather than a finished ideal, which is exactly what makes it a strong fit for a story about humanity’s first sustained interstellar reach.

StarTrek.com describes it as an experimental United Earth Starfleet prototype launched in 2151, with warp 4.5 capability and a crew of 83 — StarTrek.com, 2014. Those are fictional in-universe specifications. The same feature frames its role as helping Earth become an interstellar power and paving the way toward the Coalition of Planets and the Federation. Its historical importance is unusually large for a ship whose on-screen life is comparatively short. StarTrek.com’s NX-01 feature.

5. NCC-1701-C

The Enterprise-C has one of the most consequential stories attached to any ship on this list. In “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” its defense of the Klingon outpost Narendra III and its return through a temporal rift alter the context of Federation-Klingon relations. The ship’s limited screen presence works in its favor: its sacrifice gives the design a focused, memorable legacy rather than a long run of less-defining appearances.

Visually, the C sits between the original-era and later Galaxy-class sensibilities. It may not have the instantly iconic profile of the original or D, but its story makes it one of the clearest examples of an Enterprise representing a turning point. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

6. NCC-1701-E

Picard’s next Enterprise has a sleek, forward-driving design that suits the film era’s more action-oriented scale. It looks like a deliberate departure from the D’s broad, inhabited feel: narrower, more assertive, and built to read as a new flagship rather than a continuation of the same silhouette.

Rank #3
AMT Star Trek Model Kit (U.S.S. Enterprise Refit)
  • Plastic Model Kit, Assembly required
  • Accurate Scale Model
  • Model Kit
  • Detailed Instructions Provided

StarTrek.com’s overview describes it as Picard’s new home after the D’s destruction and notes its role in the Borg crisis. Its later fate remains elusive in that account, so the ship’s legacy is less complete than those of the original, refit, or D. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

7. NCC-1701-A

The Enterprise-A carries the original-cast era forward, but it inevitably lives in the shadow of the ship it succeeds. Its appeal is partly transitional: the audience sees Kirk and his crew continue into a new chapter, while the ship becomes the setting for the close of their film-era story.

StarTrek.com’s retrospective describes the events of The Undiscovered Country and says Starfleet recalled the ship for decommissioning. That ending gives the A a clear place in the original crew’s legacy, even if its design does not redefine the Enterprise silhouette. StarTrek.com’s NCC-1701-A retrospective.

8. NCC-1701-B

The B’s screen story is brief but emotionally significant. On its first voyage, it responds to ships trapped in the Nexus energy ribbon; the official account says 47 El-Aurian refugees were rescued — StarTrek.com, circa 2025. The event is also associated with Kirk’s apparent death, giving the ship a place in the handoff between generations.

Its Excelsior-derived design is handsome, but the B has less opportunity than the A, C, or D to establish a distinct identity through a sustained run of stories. Its ranking reflects that thinner narrative record, not a lack of potential. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

Rank #4
AMT - Star Trek: The Original Series U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, 1:1000 Scale, Skill Level 2
  • Build the Iconic U.S.S. Enterprise: Assemble the famous starship from STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES in 1 of 3 ways: 1st pilot, 2nd pilot, or the production version, perfect for dedicated fans and modelers.

  • Complete Display Package: Comes with a dome base with metal rod support and a water-slide decal sheet with all ship markings and identification registries. Finished model measures 11 inches long, suitable for ages 10+.

9. Enterprise-J

The J is the most speculative design in the ranking: it appears in a potential 26th-century future shown to Jonathan Archer, not as a ship in the present-day core events of Enterprise. Its enormous, unfamiliar form suggests a Federation whose scale and technology have moved far beyond the early starships.

Its association with the Federation’s victory over the Sphere Builders at Procyon V gives it historical weight within that future, but the limited glimpse leaves little room for a developed ship identity. It ranks below the ships whose designs and stories audiences have seen more fully. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

10. NCC-1701-G

The G enters service under a familiar name but a different identity: it was formerly the Titan-A. StarTrek.com’s overview connects its new designation to the crew’s role in thwarting the Changeling and Borg plots. That history gives the ship an unusual legacy of survival and renaming rather than a clean introduction as a newly built Enterprise.

The G’s lower placement is about how little time its Enterprise chapter has had to establish its own visual and narrative signature. Its story begins with a meaningful transition, but its long-term place among the line remains open. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

11. NCC-1701-F

The F is a striking late-era flagship, but its screen history is constrained by its appearance in the events of 2401. It participates in Frontier Day and is assimilated during the Borg attack, a dramatic endpoint that leaves less space for the ship to accumulate stories of its own.

Its low position is not a judgment that the design is poor; it reflects the mismatch between a large, impressive vessel and a comparatively short narrative window. In a ranking weighted toward developed legacy as well as silhouette, the F has not yet had the screen time of the ships above it. StarTrek.com’s flagship overview.

Which Star Trek Enterprise is the best?

If “best” means the clearest defining design, the original NCC-1701 is the strongest choice. For a cinematic reinterpretation, the refit is hard to surpass; for a ship whose later return adds a powerful new chapter, the D stands out. The NX-01 and C rank especially well when historical consequence is the deciding factor. The later lettered ships have meaningful moments, but several have had less screen time in which to build a lasting identity.
