Yes. Alec Baldwin’s New Mexico criminal case ended after special prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew the State’s appeal on December 23, 2024. The appeal had challenged a judge’s dismissal of the charges during Baldwin’s July 2024 trial. The charges were dismissed before a jury returned a verdict, so Baldwin was not acquitted by a jury.
What happened to the appeal?
On November 21, 2024, the State filed a notice of appeal seeking to challenge the trial judge’s dismissal of the charges against Baldwin, including involuntary manslaughter. On December 23, Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew that notice. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office said the decision followed consultation with Halyna Hutchins’ family and cited multiple barriers to continuing the prosecution. The withdrawal ended the State’s effort to overturn the dismissal. The district attorney’s office statement gives the filing and withdrawal dates and Morrissey’s explanation.

Morrissey said, “This has always been about seeking justice for Halyna Hutchins,” and expressed regret that Baldwin would not be held accountable for his role in her death. That was the prosecutor’s view of the outcome, not a finding of criminal responsibility by a court.
Was Baldwin acquitted?
No jury acquittal occurred. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case during the July 2024 trial, before the jury returned a verdict. The State then filed an appeal and later withdrew it. Those procedural events ended the criminal prosecution, but they are not the same as a jury finding Baldwin not guilty.

- RUST AND BONE is an extraordinary story of survival and salvation from the acclaimed, award-winning director of A Prophet.
Baldwin’s attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro described the appeal’s dismissal as “the final vindication” of their position that Baldwin committed no crime. That is the defense’s characterization; it should not be mistaken for a jury verdict or a separate court ruling on the merits of that claim. The Associated Press account reports both the procedural outcome and the attorneys’ statement.
Why did the judge dismiss the case?
The dispute involved ammunition delivered to sheriff’s investigators. Baldwin’s lawyers argued that the ammunition had not been disclosed to the defense and said investigators had placed it in a separate case file. Prosecutors said they considered the ammunition unrelated and unimportant. Judge Sommer dismissed the case during the trial after the evidence-disclosure dispute.

Those competing descriptions should remain attributed to the parties. Morrissey’s later withdrawal of the appeal did not itself adjudicate the ammunition dispute; it ended the State’s attempt to challenge the dismissal.
What happened in the Rust shooting?
On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was injured during a rehearsal on the set of Rust outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. The criminal case against Baldwin concerned that shooting.

How was Baldwin’s case different from the cases against other Rust personnel?
The outcomes involving armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and assistant director David Halls were separate proceedings, involving different defendants and dispositions. The AP reported that Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months. Halls pleaded no contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of unsupervised probation. Those outcomes do not change how Baldwin’s case ended.

No. The criminal prosecution and civil claims are separate. In December 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that a case brought by Hutchins’ parents and sister was continuing, distinct from a settlement involving her husband and son. That report describes the status at that time; it does not establish the present status of every related civil case.
