Alan Rickman is the best part of Galaxy Quest because he makes Alexander Dane funny and unexpectedly moving at the same time. Dane resents being known as Dr. Lazarus, the alien hero he played on television; when the Thermians mistake the show for real history, that unwanted persona becomes a chance to do genuine good. Rickman makes the gap between those two identities the film’s sharpest joke—and its most affecting turn.
Who does Alan Rickman play in Galaxy Quest?
Rickman plays Alexander Dane, a classically trained actor famous for portraying Dr. Lazarus, a half-human, half-reptilian character on the fictional television series Galaxy Quest. The movie, directed by Dean Parisot, opened in the United States on December 25, 1999, and runs 103 minutes, according to the American Film Institute’s catalog. Its premise turns the cast’s old television adventures into a real-world problem: aliens called the Thermians have treated the broadcasts as historical records and enlist the actors to help them.

Why does Alexander Dane hate playing Dr. Lazarus?
Dane feels the role has eclipsed the serious stage career he wanted. A contemporary Los Angeles Times review notes his fixation on the curtain calls for his Richard III and the indignity of being reduced to convention appearances in the alien headgear. His frustration is more specific than a simple disdain for science fiction: he is proud of his craft, but the public wants the persona he believes has narrowed his identity.
That contradiction gives Rickman a precise comic engine. Dane’s controlled irritation, theatrical pride, and awareness of how ridiculous he looks all coexist. He is not merely delivering a sneer at fans; he is playing someone who recognizes that his most famous work is also the part of himself he most wants to escape.

How does Rickman turn the joke into something sincere?
The Thermians’ mistake changes the meaning of Dane’s old performance. What he considered an embarrassing fiction has become a guide for people facing actual danger. Dane’s resentment therefore does more than produce a recurring gag: it establishes the distance he must cross before he can act sincerely as the hero others believe him to be.
Rickman makes that shift land by holding onto the character’s pride rather than erasing it. The same self-consciousness that makes Dane’s exasperation funny becomes the doorway to vulnerability once the role carries real stakes. The film can tease his theatrical vanity and still take seriously the possibility that he might rise to the occasion.

Why does Rickman stand out in an ensemble?
Galaxy Quest gives its other performers distinct comic problems: Jason Nesmith has to move from egotism toward courage, Gwen DeMarco resents being reduced to a catchphrase, and Guy Fleegman fears being expendable. Rickman’s particular advantage is the double register of Dane’s story: status anxiety supplies the comedy, while the gap between stage persona and real responsibility supplies emotional weight. Calling him the best is a critical judgment, not a measurable ranking, but it rests on how much tonal work his character carries.

At BAFTA’s A Life in Pictures event on April 15, 2015, Rickman was asked whether the actors knew the script was special. His reply was brief: “All the actors did.” He also recalled that the cast became a close working group and sometimes asked for time to sort out the day together. His comments support the sense of an ensemble that recognized the material’s promise; they do not suggest that Rickman alone shaped the film’s emotional structure.
