Alan Cumming apologized at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards after involuntary vocal tics from Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson were heard during the ceremony. Cumming later made a fuller public apology for the pain Black people felt when a racist slur was broadcast. BAFTA and the BBC also apologized for their own roles in the incident.

What happened at the BAFTAs?

John Davidson attended the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall in connection with I Swear, a film based on his life experience. During the ceremony, an offensive vocal tic was heard while Sinners actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award.

BAFTA said it had told guests before and during the ceremony that Davidson was in the room and that they might hear strong language, involuntary noises, or movements. Davidson later left the auditorium and watched the rest of the ceremony on a screen, saying he was aware his tics were causing distress.

The BBC’s delayed broadcast included the slur. The corporation later removed the programme from iPlayer for editing. Contemporaneous reporting said the production team monitoring the event from a truck did not hear the slur; that context does not change the broadcaster’s responsibility for what went out on air.

Why were the words involuntary—and why did they still cause harm?

Davidson’s vocalizations were tics associated with Tourette syndrome, not intentional statements or evidence of his beliefs. Davidson said he was “deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.” Tourettes Action likewise stressed that tics “are not a reflection of a person’s beliefs, intentions or character.”

That explanation does not erase the impact of hearing racist language. Cumming later acknowledged the pain Black people experienced, and BAFTA’s subsequent apology recognized the harm caused to people affected by the incident. Both realities matter: Davidson did not choose the tic, and people who heard the slur could still be hurt by it.

The Associated Press, citing the Tourette Association of America, reported that 10–15% of people with Tourette syndrome experience coprolalia, involuntary swearing or use of socially unacceptable words or phrases. That is an estimate reported secondhand, not a figure independently verified here; it should not be taken to suggest that such tics are typical of everyone with Tourette syndrome.

What did Alan Cumming say, and when did he apologize?

During the ceremony

Cumming addressed the audience during the event, saying: “You may have heard some strong and offensive language tonight. If you have seen the film I Swear, you will know that film is about the experience of a person with Tourette syndrome. Tourette syndrome is a disability and the tics you have heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette syndrome has no control over their language. We apologise if you were offended.”

In a public statement on 3 March

In a fuller statement reported by ITV on 3 March, Cumming said: “I’m so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt hearing that word echoed round the world.” He also said: “We were all let down by decisions made to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech.” The later statement directly named the pain caused by the slur, going beyond the conditional wording of his remarks on stage.

How did BAFTA and the BBC respond?

BAFTA’s responsibility for the event

BAFTA initially said: “We take full responsibility for putting our guests in a very difficult situation and we apologise to all.” It apologized to Jordan, Lindo, and others affected. In April, following an independent review, BAFTA apologized unreservedly to the Black community, the disability community—including people with Tourette syndrome—as well as ceremony guests, members, and viewers. The review found weaknesses in planning, escalation procedures, and crisis coordination, but no evidence of malicious intent by those delivering the event.

The BBC’s responsibility for the broadcast

The BBC apologized for failing to edit the language out before transmission. As reported by The Guardian, the BBC Executive Complaints Unit later found that including the slur breached editorial standards and had no editorial justification, while describing the breach as unintentional. The finding addresses the broadcast decision; it does not make Davidson responsible for the involuntary tic.

Why is I Swear part of the story?

I Swear is based on Davidson’s life experience and depicts Tourette syndrome, which is why Cumming referred to the film while explaining the tics to the audience. The Associated Press reported that the film won two BAFTAs, including best actor for Robert Aramayo. The film provides context for Davidson’s presence, but the incident also raised separate questions about how the ceremony was planned and how the BBC handled its delayed broadcast.
