The full tribute, reported as shared with Deadline on October 16, 2025, also reflects on their vivid memories together and celebrates Keaton’s presence on screen and her creative force.
What Al Pacino said about Diane Keaton
In the passage reproduced by The Guardian, Pacino said: “When I first heard the news, I was shaken,” Pacino said to Deadline. “Diane was my partner, my friend, someone who brought me happiness and, on more than one occasion influenced the direction of my life. Though over thirty years has past since we were together, the memories remain vivid, and with her passing, they have returned with a force that is both painful and moving.”
The headline phrase captures one part of a longer, grieving tribute. Pacino also praised Keaton’s energy, generosity and imagination, describing her performances as a blend of “lightning and charm, hurricanes and tenderness.” He called her “a wonder” and said acting was only one of the ways she expressed her creativity.
The Guardian reproduced further remarks in which Pacino said Keaton “opened doors for others” and inspired generations. Us Weekly reported the tribute’s closing: “People will miss her, but more than that, they will remember her. She left a mark that cannot fade. She was unstoppable, resilient and above all, deeply human,” Pacino concluded. “I will always remember her. She could fly — and in my heart, she always will.”

Their relationship
Off screen, the actors had an on-and-off romantic relationship. The Guardian describes it as continuing into the 1980s; Us Weekly reports that it lasted on and off until 1990. Pacino’s reference to their time together as more than thirty years in the past is consistent with a relationship that ended decades before his statement.
