What Eileen Bond said after the funeral
In an interview published on 13 June 2015, Eileen Bond described the day as remarkable: “What a day it was. I don’t think it could have been better if we tried.” She said the family was overwhelmed by the occasion and the expressions of support.
Speaking about the support at the burial, she said, “It just lifted our spirits no end.” These were Eileen’s reflections on the day and its effect on the family, rather than a claim about how every person present felt.
Where the service took place and what it emphasized
Alan Bond’s funeral was held on Friday, 12 June 2015, at St Patrick’s Basilica in Fremantle. PerthNow described it as a traditional, simple service that focused on Bond’s Catholic faith and his private roles as a father, grandfather, friend and business mentor. The report said hundreds attended but did not publish an exact number.

John Hughes, Eileen’s cousin and a Perth car dealer, delivered the eulogy. Bond’s sons and grandsons were among the pallbearers, and family members took part in the service. Mourners formed a guard of honour as the hearse departed for a private burial. The coverage noted that Bond’s corporate collapse, conviction and imprisonment were largely not discussed at the funeral.
Why Eileen Bond was not there
Eileen said she could not get back from London in time to attend. She recalled seeing Alan the night before he flew back to Perth for a heart operation and said she had not thought he would die. The contemporary report said Bond died at Fiona Stanley Hospital on 5 June 2015 after complications following heart surgery, without regaining consciousness.

The wake at Royal Perth Yacht Club
After the service, a wake was held at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. Eileen called it “heart-lifting” and “celebratory”; the report described friends sharing stories and laughs. Speakers included yachtsman Sir James Hardy, America’s Cup skipper John Bertrand and businessman Dallas Dempster.

Bond’s best-known sporting achievement was leading the Australia II syndicate to victory in the 1983 America’s Cup, ending 132 years of American dominance after four successive challenges, according to the America’s Cup historical profile. At the funeral, however, the emphasis reported by PerthNow was on faith and family life. The sporting milestone offers context for Bond’s public life, but it does not explain or verify Eileen’s personal account of the funeral.
