Spoilers for “Death’s Hand in Mine.” Episode 7 is a standout Lilia-centered chapter: its fractured timeline turns her earlier lapses into clues, and its tarot trial converts those clues into an emotional, visually inventive payoff. Patti LuPone is the episode’s anchor, though viewers looking mainly for Agatha may find her less central than usual.
How the nonlinear story changes what we know about Lilia
“Death’s Hand in Mine,” directed by Jac Schaeffer and written by Cameron Squires and Gia King, shifts between Lilia Calderu’s life and the Witches’ Road. The arrangement can initially feel disjointed, but it reflects Lilia’s experience of time out of sequence. Remarks and apparent lapses that seemed puzzling in earlier episodes take on new meaning when seen through her perspective.
That structure is more than a formal experiment: it makes the audience reconsider its memory of Lilia. The episode’s strongest dramatic idea is that moments that looked like confusion were connected to a different relationship with time. TheWrap interview with Schaeffer captures the ambition and difficulty of the approach: Schaeffer said she loves nonlinear storytelling but knew this episode would be “so excruciatingly hard.”
Why the tarot trial works
The tarot trial makes the cards consequential rather than decorative. References planted earlier in the season become part of the trial’s logic and Lilia’s character payoff, so the episode rewards attention without relying on exposition alone. Its visual design gives the card imagery a physical presence on the Road, making the challenge feel like an extension of the show’s witchcraft rather than a detached puzzle.

The trial also gives the nonlinear format a practical purpose: details encountered at different points in Lilia’s life converge into a single sequence. The result is both a test and a way of understanding her. Schaeffer’s interview also discusses the practical sword props used in the scene, which were placed on wires according to a preplanned “sword map.”
LuPone’s performance and the episode’s emotional stakes
Patti LuPone carries the episode through its changes in time and tone. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus describes her as the episode’s “emotionally striking linchpin,” while reviews from GamesRadar+ and Forbes also praise the emotional performance and imaginative magic. Comic relief, production design, and costuming help keep the chapter from becoming relentlessly solemn.

The episode resolves Lilia’s arc in a self-sacrificial confrontation with the Salem Seven. That choice gives the trial’s revelations a cost, rather than treating them as clever clues alone. It also reveals Rio’s identity as Death, widening the episode’s stakes without displacing Lilia as its emotional center.
The trade-off: less Agatha than some viewers may want
This is principally Lilia’s episode, not an installment built around Agatha’s perspective. GamesRadar+ lists “Not enough Agatha” among its reasons to avoid the episode, and Forbes likewise notes Kathryn Hahn’s more limited presence in recent chapters. That focus is a strength if you want Lilia’s story to come into focus; it may be a drawback if you expect every episode to keep Agatha at the center.

Episode 7 is especially rewarding for viewers invested in Lilia, nonlinear storytelling, and season-long clues that pay off through character rather than explanation alone. Its focus is narrower than an ensemble chapter, but the tarot trial, LuPone’s performance, and the consequence of Lilia’s choice make that focus feel earned.
