Spoilers for “Death’s Hand in Mine,” Episode 7 of Agatha All Along. The episode rearranges Lilia Calderu’s life into fragments because its story is meant to be experienced through her fractured sense of time. Creator Jac Schaeffer says the nonlinear structure, tarot imagery, and Rio’s reveal as Death all serve that perspective—and that Lilia’s ending is about acceptance, not a simple defeat.
Why Episode 7 unfolds out of order
“Death’s Hand in Mine” follows Lilia, a divination witch who experiences moments from her life out of sequence. Rather than present her history in conventional chronological order, the episode lets the audience encounter those fragments as she does. The structure is not a puzzle laid over her story; it is the way the episode makes her experience of time visible.
In an interview with TheWrap’s Andi Ortiz, published October 25, 2024, Schaeffer said, “I love non-linear storytelling. I’m so enamored of it, but I knew it would be so excruciatingly hard.” She took over directing the episode for scheduling reasons, and credited writers Cam Squires and Gia King with helping solve its complex structure. Associate producer Ishi Metkar helped keep the many moving pieces coordinated.
“Bops” connect moments across the timeline
The production tracked what it called “Lilia’s bops”: brief fragments that connect scenes or finish lines across different points in her life. Those transitions had to work both as pieces of the plot and as cues that the audience was moving through Lilia’s time rather than following a straight chronology.

The team also tracked “tarot bops,” moments when card imagery had to be recreated. Schaeffer described using a living transition document to align shots and maintain continuity across production. Brittany Horn, Schaeffer’s assistant and an artist and graphic designer, created the card artwork.
How the tarot trial and its imagery work
Lilia’s trial uses a custom tarot spread. Schaeffer said the team did not simply reproduce a standard layout: it designed a spread of its own while aiming to remain faithful to the meanings of the cards. As she put it, “No, no, no. We’re going to make up our own spread, and we’re going to do the spread with diligence and and we will be faithful to the meanings of the card. But we will make it our own.”

That distinction matters: the spread is part of the show’s fictional storytelling, not a claim that the trial follows one established tarot arrangement. Its card images and meanings are used to shape Lilia’s test and connect it to the episode’s larger movement through her life.
Why Rio is revealed as Death
The episode reveals that Rio is Death. Schaeffer said the reveal’s visual design was meant to evoke the Death tarot card and draw on the classic comic-book image of Lady Death. The point was not to present Death as merely evil or menacing; the show wanted a more nuanced figure, particularly in the way Lilia comes to face her.

Schaeffer said Lilia’s story is about “acceptance” of death and described the intended ending as “this transcendence, this total acceptance.” That framing gives the reveal a thematic role: Death is the presence Lilia must reckon with, while the emotional focus remains on Lilia’s passage toward acceptance.
What Lilia’s ending required on set
The episode’s final sequence also depended on carefully planned physical effects. Schaeffer said the swords were practical props on wires, and the production mapped their positions before the actors rehearsed. “Those swords were real, they were on wires and they had to be plotted. We had a sword map and had to decide where every sword went before the actors even got into the space for rehearsal.”

For Lilia’s fall, Patti LuPone was put on wires, and the production combined footage of the tower with blue-screen shots. Schaeffer’s creative explanation of the ending is as important as its staging: she said the show wanted to treat death with gravity, while centering Lilia’s acceptance rather than turning her end into a spectacle without emotional meaning.

No. Schaeffer said the exchange about Wanda is written from Agatha’s point of view. Agatha saw a dead body while under a spell, but she was not present when Wundagore fell; she therefore does not know Wanda’s fate. Schaeffer said the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe question was not her department, so this episode does not settle whether Wanda is alive or dead.

Why the episode treats every detail as consequential
The fragments, card images, transitions, and physical staging all contribute to an episode built around Lilia’s particular way of experiencing time and confronting death. Schaeffer summed up the density of those choices by saying, “I think everything in this episode is of consequence, is what I would say.” The design details are not all clues with one hidden answer; they help make the episode’s structure and emotional perspective cohere.
