“Familiar By Thy Side” answers the mystery of Billy Maximoff’s identity, but Jen Lennon’s criticism in The A.V. Club is that it spends more time explaining what happened than exploring how Billy feels about it. That imbalance—not exposition by itself—is the episode’s frustrating tradeoff: viewers get the continuity answers, while Billy’s experience of living in another boy’s body receives less room to resonate.
Why does episode 6 feel like a lore dump?
The episode delivers several connected answers in one rewind: William Kaplan dies in a car crash as Wanda’s Westview anomaly collapses, and Billy Maximoff awakens in William’s body. It then follows Billy as he investigates his identity, learns about Agatha and the Witches’ Road, and eventually seeks Agatha out. Lennon calls it “the lore dump episode,” arguing that the explanations crowd out a deeper account of Billy’s response to discovering who he is.
That is a criticism of emphasis, not a claim that the episode should have withheld every answer. The revelations are central to the story. The question is whether the episode gives Billy’s emotional and adolescent experience—inhabiting a foreign body and concealing that difference—weight comparable to the information it supplies.
What the flashback adds to the story
William Kaplan’s death and Billy’s awakening
Episode 6, “Familiar By Thy Side,” begins with William’s bar mitzvah and the crash that coincides with the collapse of Wanda’s Westview anomaly. William dies; Billy’s soul awakens in his body. The episode establishes the event behind the identity mystery that has been driving the series.

Billy’s search for answers
Three years later, Billy investigates what happened. He meets Ralph Bohner, learns more about Agatha and the Witches’ Road, and seeks Agatha out. In the present-day Road storyline, he tells her that he wants to find his twin brother, Tommy.
A return to the premiere
The episode also revisits the first episode’s events from Billy’s perspective. Lennon reports that the replay of premiere material lasts seven minutes and that Ralph Bohner appears for ten minutes to recount events from WandaVision. Those are the reviewer’s reported durations, not independently measured runtime figures.

Why the structure was intentional
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer described the rewind as a deliberate way to pair Billy’s backstory with answers to the show’s central mystery, while stepping outside the Road. In an October 18, 2024, interview with TheWrap, she said: “We decided to do it in Episode 6, and we decided to pair it with the Billy backstory, so that you would actually get so much more out of it, because you’re getting the answers that you’re craving about who is this kid, and unpacking the primary mystery of the show, while also stepping outside, stepping off the road.”
Schaeffer also said the Road’s trials have a claustrophobic, repeating cadence, and she wanted a change of rhythm: “The road is quite claustrophobic. The trials have a cadence to them, and I thought it would serve the experience, the linear watch of the show, to get a palate cleanser and to feel different stakes.” That rationale makes the episode’s format shift understandable. It does not, on its own, resolve the question of whether the resulting balance between plot explanation and Billy’s inner life works.

The episode-level criticism and the season-level counterpoint
Lennon’s objection is about point of view: the episode explains Billy’s history but, in her view, offers frustratingly little insight into how he feels about learning who he is. More time with his adolescence—especially the disorientation of inhabiting William’s body and hiding the difference—could have made the revelations feel less like a sequence of answers and more like lived experience.
That judgment should be kept to its proper scale. It is a critical interpretation of this episode, not proof that every Marvel Cinematic Universe story makes the same mistake. The rewind format also invites comparison with WandaVision episode four, but the available evidence supports a discussion of this storytelling choice, not a franchise-wide verdict.

Nor does an episode-level criticism settle the series’ overall character work. In its October 31, 2024, season retrospective, TIME argues that later character-focused episodes helped viewers empathize with Billy and Agatha. The distinction matters: a later arc can deepen a character without necessarily making the earlier episode’s emotional focus feel more complete.

| Reading | What it emphasizes | What it means for the criticism |
|---|---|---|
| Structural purpose | Schaeffer said the flashback answers questions about Billy and breaks up the Road’s claustrophobic rhythm. | The exposition has a clear narrative and pacing function. |
| Character interiority | Lennon argues that Billy’s feelings about his identity and body receive too little attention beside the explanations. | The criticism concerns emotional emphasis, not simply the presence of lore. |
| Season-wide development | TIME credits later character-focused episodes with building empathy for Billy and Agatha. | The season may address some character needs that this episode leaves underdeveloped. |
The fairest verdict is therefore specific: episode 6 is an effective answer to a continuity mystery and a purposeful change of pace, but its explanatory work can feel more fully realized than its account of Billy’s emotional response. Whether that tradeoff frustrates a viewer depends partly on how much they value immediate character interiority versus answers that clarify the season’s central mystery.
