Mitch Guerra reached the cast of Survivor 48 after years of pursuing a place on the show. He has described the wait in two different ways: in an interview with the National Stuttering Association, he said he had applied for 10 years; in a 2025 interview with Parade, he said he had been trying to get on for 20 years. The accounts do not explain whether those figures describe different parts of the process.
Who is Mitch Guerra on Survivor 48?
Guerra is a longtime Survivor fan and a cast member on the show’s 48th season. His story is about more than finally reaching the island: he has spoken about living with a stutter, and about wanting to be seen as a person with many interests rather than defined by one aspect of his identity.
In an opening-cast interview reported by Parade on February 27, 2025, Guerra said he had watched the show since Season 4. He recalled falling in love with it and hoping that, season after season, he might someday get the opportunity to play. Read the Parade cast-interview report.
How long did Guerra try to get on Survivor?
The two published accounts use different timelines, so they should not be treated as a single settled figure.

Read the National Stuttering Association profile.
- Twenty years trying: In Parade‘s report, host Jeff Probst remarked that the moment Guerra was referring to was 20 years earlier. Guerra replied, “I’ve been trying to get out here the last 20 years!”
The sources do not clarify whether “applying” and “trying” refer to the same span of time. The careful conclusion is that Guerra pursued a place on the show for years, while preserving his two different descriptions of that pursuit.
What did Guerra say about being cast?
Guerra told the National Stuttering Association that he was at a different point in his life than during earlier applications. He said he is open about stuttering, but emphasized that there are “so many other interesting facts about me other than being a PWS” (a person who stutters). He described casting as requiring a candidate to bring multiple interesting aspects of themselves to the game.

That account gives his eventual casting a personal context without reducing it to one explanation. Guerra credited a change in where he was in life; he did not say that his stutter alone caused the casting decision.
Why did seeing a Survivor contestant with a struggle matter to him?
Guerra told Parade that watching a contestant on Survivor: The Amazon who had a struggle of her own helped him imagine that someone facing a challenge could still play the game. He connected that memory to his long-standing ambition to join the cast.

The National Stuttering Association’s profile also discusses how Survivor‘s deception and high-pressure conversations could bring stereotypes about stuttering into play. That is the article’s discussion of the pressures surrounding the game, not evidence of what every castmate thought or how every interaction unfolded.

Guerra told the National Stuttering Association, “I just wanted to make myself as a proud as possible and the fact that I got out there is a huge accomplishment.” He also said, “I just hope I did everyone proud.” His words frame reaching Fiji as meaningful in its own right, while leaving room for viewers to understand him through the full range of who he is—not only through stuttering or the length of his application journey.
