Adam Devine says a cement truck hit him when he was 11, leaving him with severe leg injuries and a long recovery. He has also said that doctors later feared he was dying while he was experiencing spasms and stiff-person syndrome was suspected. Devine said a Philadelphia specialist later ruled out that condition and linked his symptoms to the old injuries. This is his account, not a diagnosis confirmed by medical records.
What happened when Adam Devine was 11?
Devine has said he was riding his bicycle across a road when a cement truck struck him. In a 2023 High Times interview, he recalled being hit by a “32-ton cement truck” and being unable to walk for almost two years. In a 2025 interview on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, he described severe leg injuries, skin grafts and spending a couple of weeks in a medically induced coma. The truck’s weight and the details of the crash are Devine’s recollections.
He has given approximate, differing estimates of the number of operations: “25 or 30 surgeries or something like that” in 2023, and “something like 26 or 28 surgeries” in the 2025 Conan interview. The figures are not an exact count.
How did the recovery lead him toward comedy?
Devine has described comedy as a way to connect with people while he was recovering. From his wheelchair, he called local Omaha radio stations using character voices. He has said performing helped him make friends and deflect bullying, and that it gave him something he could do during a period when he could not walk.

What did he mean when he said doctors told him he was dying?
In 2025 coverage of an interview with Graham Bensinger, Devine said he had experienced spasms and that doctors had told him he was dying within the prior year. Stiff-person syndrome was initially suspected, according to that report. The remark refers to what Devine says he was told during that health scare; it does not establish that he had the condition.

In the later Conan interview, Devine said he consulted a specialist in Philadelphia who told him he did not have stiff-person syndrome and attributed his symptoms to lingering effects of the childhood accident. He also said that at the time he had difficulty standing for more than about 15 or 20 minutes, and was doing physical therapy and other forms of body care.
