A new Judge Dredd film is listed as in development, with Taika Waititi reportedly attached to direct and Drew Pearce to write. But it is not confirmed as a direct sequel to the 2012 film, and no studio, cast or production schedule had been announced in the latest dated status listing, updated 19 May 2026.
Is the new Judge Dredd film a sequel to the 2012 movie?
That is not established. The July 2025 report described a new Judge Dredd movie and suggested it may be a reboot drawing more directly on the comics, rather than a continuation of the 2012 film. Calling it a sequel, as the original headline does, makes the connection sound more definite than the available information supports.
The 2012 film is therefore useful context for why the new project attracts attention, but there is no confirmed continuity link, returning character, or story connection between the two films.
What is confirmed about the project?
T3 reported on 18 July 2025 that Taika Waititi was attached to direct and Drew Pearce was assigned the screenplay. Variety also reported the attachments that day. These are reported creative attachments; they do not by themselves mean a film has been greenlit or entered production.

A Film & Television Industry Alliance / Production List entry, last updated 19 May 2026, listed the feature as in development and named Waititi as director and Pearce as writer. It also listed Rebellion Developments and Vertigo Entertainment among the production companies. This is a dated industry listing, not an official studio announcement.
Who is Taika Waititi, and what does “Marvel director” mean here?
Waititi is a filmmaker associated with Marvel through his work directing Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. That background explains the headline’s shorthand, but it does not establish what style he will bring to Judge Dredd. No confirmed details about the new film’s tone or approach were reported.

- No studio or distributor had been announced in the Production List update dated 19 May 2026.
- No cast, including Karl Urban, had been confirmed in the consulted reports.
- No production timeline, shoot date or release date had been announced.
- No attributable direct statement from a named person or rights-holder about this specific project appeared in the consulted coverage.
Until an official studio or rights-holder announcement confirms production, distribution and cast, the project’s development listing and reported attachments are the most concrete status available.

Judge Dredd originated in 2000 AD, the British anthology comic. The 2025 reporting suggested the proposed film may draw directly from the source comics. For readers curious about the character while the film remains in development, a Judge Dredd collection or an issue of 2000 AD is the relevant place to start; that is a recommendation to explore the source material, not a tie-in to an unreleased film.
