The National Portrait Gallery describes him as a pioneer of Indian classical dance; its account of his tours and celebrated 1939 London debut shows a career whose reach can be easier to miss in present-day dance histories than its scale suggests. This visual tribute follows that career through the photographs, programmes and other archival traces that remain.
Who was Ram Gopal?
Born in Bangalore to a Rajput father and Burmese mother, Gopal learned Bharata Natyam and Kathakali from leading teachers, according to the National Portrait Gallery. He became a dancer, choreographer and teacher whose career moved between Indian performance traditions and international stages. Calling him “forgotten” is an editorial framing of that gap in visibility, not a measurable claim about how many people know his name.
Gopal’s own words suggest how he understood movement: “I love to move, to leap, to float …well, just let the spirit seize me at the sound of drums or music.” The National Portrait Gallery attributes the sentence to his 1957 autobiography, Rhythm in the Heavens.
How did Ram Gopal reach international audiences?
From touring in the 1930s to London in 1939
Gopal began touring overseas in the 1930s, first with American dancer La Meri. The National Portrait Gallery describes his 1939 appearance at London’s Aldwych Theatre as a celebrated debut, performed to a full house. An image catalogue record notes that Gopal and his company arrived in London after appearances in Warsaw, Paris and the United States; it offers a glimpse of an itinerary rather than a complete tour history (VADS/SADAA record).

Dance historian Cyril Beaumont praised the extent of Gopal’s touring, writing: “I should doubt if any male dancer has travelled more than he, and always with success and a request to return.” This is a period assessment, not independently verified comparative data.
War, London and continued touring
During the Second World War, Gopal returned to India and danced for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). In the 1950s he settled in London, but continued touring in the UK, Europe, the United States and India. The South Asian Diaspora Arts Archive (SADAA) also records his lectures and demonstrations at Sanskrit universities.

A VADS/SADAA catalogue record depicts Gopal as Shiva in Dance of the Setting Sun, offering a specific visual trace of one of those productions (VADS/SADAA record). The archive catalogue is useful for locating images, but a photograph alone cannot establish the full choreography, music or performance context.

Gopal described Dances of India as an effort to honour tradition without being confined by it: “I feel I have justified the past while keeping in touch with the present.” The National Portrait Gallery also reproduces his hope that “the highest cultures of the East and the West will be drawn together and will work towards a true culture which is above all distinctions of race, nation, and faith.”
How did Gopal connect Indian dance with other performance worlds?
Gopal’s international work was not simply a matter of “introducing” Indian dance to audiences as though it had no prior presence abroad. He toured extensively, worked with performers trained in Indian, Javanese and Balinese styles, and performed in theatrical contexts beyond India. His career is better understood as a sustained negotiation between dance traditions, audiences and stages.

In 1960, he collaborated with English ballerina Alicia Markova on the duet Radha-Krishna. The partnership brought artists associated with different dance traditions together in a shared work; the available record supports describing that collaboration, rather than making an unsupported claim about its influence on ballet or Indian dance.
Where can you see Gopal’s work beyond the stage?
Film and recorded images
The National Portrait Gallery highlights Gopal’s work as a dancer and choreographer in American films, including Elephant Walk (1954). SADAA also names The Purple Plain (1954). Archival photographs and promotional materials preserve another part of his public image: the costumes, poses and staging that helped present his work to audiences.
The National Portrait Gallery’s 2016 display included five vintage photographs by Carl Van Vechten, Madame D’Ora and George Hurrell. Its catalogue identifies a 1948 George Hurrell portrait as NPG x128613. These records document particular images and photographers; they do not make the images automatically available for republication.

What the archive holds—and what a visual record can tell you
SADAA’s Ram Gopal Collection includes photographs, negatives, biographical information and promotional material. Related catalogue notes describe newspaper articles, costume imagery, slides, advertisements and programmes. Together, these materials can help trace how Gopal’s performances were staged and publicised. Their evidentiary limits matter: a programme can establish a billed work or venue, while a photograph captures a selected moment, not an entire performance.
The collection comprises two boxes of documents and photographs, with material dated from the 1930s to 2016. Archive access is by appointment and subject to preservation requirements and applicable law. SADAA states that material is protected by copyright unless otherwise indicated and that publication requires permission from the copyright holder, subject to statutory exceptions. - Indian Dancing (1951), co-written with Serozh Dadachanji, is a guide for Western readers. SADAA’s record describes chapters on Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri and mudras, accompanied by 94 monochrome photographs.
- Rhythm in the Heavens (1957) is Gopal’s autobiography. SADAA notes chapters on his first American tour, London, his troupe and Dance of Siva.
For readers seeking a modern biographical account, Ann R. David’s Ram Gopal: Interweaving Histories of Indian Dance was published by Methuen Drama India/Bloomsbury in 2024. The publisher describes it as a biography and history of Gopal’s role in bringing Indian dance to international audiences from the 1930s to the late 1960s, drawing on interviews with family, costume-makers, friends, partners, fellow dancers and audience members. Its listing identifies a 248-page illustrated hardback (ISBN 9789356401938) and ebook editions; editions and availability may vary. See the publisher’s listing.
How did Gopal’s career end?
SADAA records that Gopal’s last tour was to the United States in 1988, after which he retired. He died in 2003. The National Portrait Gallery notes that he received the Indian honorific title Pandit in 1990 and was appointed OBE in 1999.
