Kurt Angle called him “the most underrated wrestler of all time”—an opinion, not a consensus, but one that makes sense when set against the range of Tajiri’s work.
How Tajiri arrived in WWE
Born September 29, 1970, in Tamana, Kumamoto Prefecture, Tajiri made his professional wrestling debut on September 19, 1994. A biography published by Tokuma Shoten traces his route through Mexico’s EMLL and the United States’ ECW before WWE. WWE says he debuted for ECW in the U.S. in late 1998 and joined WWE after ECW closed in 2001, making his WWE debut that May. Tokuma Shoten’s biographical note and WWE’s career profile establish a path across wrestling scenes rather than a story confined to one company.

In WWE, he initially served as William Regal’s assistant. The role let him provide comic relief, but it did not soften the danger he brought to a match: he could be the joke’s knowing participant one moment and a sharp, unpredictable opponent the next.
What did Tajiri achieve in WWE?
WWE’s profile lists a broad set of championships: three Cruiserweight Championship reigns, the Light Heavyweight Championship, the United States Championship, and tag-team titles with Eddie Guerrero and William Regal. The company also lists the ECW Television and Tag Team titles among his career highlights. These are WWE’s own career-summary claims; the championship names reflect the branding used at different points in wrestling history.

| Singles championships | Cruiserweight Championship (three times), Light Heavyweight Championship, and United States Championship |

The résumé is significant, but it has a clear boundary: WWE’s profile does not list the company’s top world championship. That distinction helps explain why a career can be decorated without being remembered primarily through a single headline title. Tajiri’s case rests on the combination of championships, in-ring identity, and character work—not a claim that he held every major prize.
What made his wrestling style distinctive?
WWE describes Tajiri as trained in lucha libre and Japanese wrestling styles. Its profile points to a toolkit with a strong visual signature: roundhouse kicks, a moonsault, corkscrew elbow drops, the Tarantula applied in the ropes, and the green mist. Those details made his matches easy to recognize even when he was working alongside larger or more established names.
His look evolved with the character. Early blue-and-white tights gave way to long ninja pants and the “Japanese Buzzsaw” identity. The change reinforced the same contrast that defined his offense: controlled, quick movement followed by sudden, punishing strikes. The visual and physical elements worked together rather than relying on one signature move alone.

Why could Tajiri be both funny and intimidating?
WWE’s official profile calls him “one of WWE’s most versatile Superstars,” a promotional assessment, but the contrast it describes is supported by his roles. As Regal’s assistant, Tajiri could deliver expressive comic timing; in the ring, his kicks, rope-assisted Tarantula, and mist made him a credible threat. The humor did not erase the violence, and the menace did not prevent him from being entertaining outside a match.
Kurt Angle made that range central to his praise. In comments from The Kurt Angle Show transcribed by Fightful, Angle called Tajiri “the most underrated wrestler of all time” and said, “This kid oozed charisma. He didn’t speak English, but you could understand him, and you knew by his face what he meant.” Angle also praised his in-ring style and charisma, and cited Tajiri’s work in a Halloween party segment as an example of his ability to make people laugh. The comments are Angle’s assessment as reported by Fightful; they should not be mistaken for an independently measured ranking.

WWE says Tajiri left the company in December 2005 to return to Japan. More than a decade later, he came back for the 2016 Cruiserweight Classic, where WWE’s preview says he was eliminated in the second round by Gran Metalik.

His return continued on 205 Live. On January 3, 2017, Tajiri defeated Sean Maluta in his debut for the show. WWE’s match report documents the win, while its debut coverage records the follow-up image: Brian Kendrick approached Tajiri, who misted him. A biography published by Tokuma Shoten says a knee injury led to Tajiri’s WWE departure in 2017.
The comeback was brief, but it echoed the earlier run. In a scene centered on cruiserweight wrestling, Tajiri could still make a match distinct through speed and precision—and make a moment instantly legible through the green mist.
Was Tajiri underrated?
“Underrated” is a judgment, not a measurable career statistic. Angle’s strong endorsement gives the argument a clear voice, while WWE’s own profile recognizes Tajiri as versatile and lists his championships. The case for the label is more specific than saying he was overlooked by everyone: his accomplishments were real, yet his WWE story is often easier to reduce to a signature mist or a comic partnership than to appreciate as the full combination of titles, distinctive offense, and character range.
For viewers revisiting the run, WWE’s profile currently features a “Best of Tajiri” collection described as more than two hours of full matches against Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Super Crazy, and others.
