The earliest clearly dated Borg event shown in Star Trek is a time-travel incursion into 2063—not the Borg’s origin. The stories that follow trace the Collective’s first contact with Starfleet, its assault on the Federation, Voyager’s dealings with Borg drones, and separate Borg developments in Picard. Dates are exact only where the stories establish them; several episodes are placed broadly in their series’ 24th- or 25th-century eras.

The Borg timeline in in-universe order

This is a chronology of major canonical turning points, not a list of every Borg appearance or a broadcast-order guide. “First Contact” below refers both to the 2063 event and to the 24th-century film that depicts it; those are different points in the story’s chronology.

In-universe placement Story What happens Why it matters
2063 Star Trek: First Contact A Borg sphere travels back from the 24th century to stop Zefram Cochrane’s Phoenix flight and prevent humanity’s first contact with the Vulcans. The Enterprise-E crew follows it and stops the plan. This is the earliest clearly dated Borg event shown here, not a date for the Collective’s creation.
22nd century, after the 2063 incursion Enterprise, “Regeneration” Borg remains left on Earth are reanimated. The drones threaten the Enterprise NX-01 and send a signal toward the Delta Quadrant. The episode connects the film’s time-travel story to later Borg encounters. The signal may alert the Collective to Earth; its full significance is not established.
24th century The Next Generation, “Q Who” Q hurls the Enterprise-D into the Borg’s path. The Enterprise-D crew—and, through them, the Federation—learns of the Borg.
24th century The Next Generation, “The Best of Both Worlds” The Borg attack the Federation. They capture and assimilate Captain Picard, making him Locutus, before the Enterprise crew rescues him. The encounter turns the Borg into a direct Federation threat and makes Picard’s assimilation a defining event in the conflict.
24th century, after “The Best of Both Worlds” The Next Generation, “I, Borg” The Enterprise crew encounters a lone Borg drone. The episode explores whether an individual drone can be separated from the Collective and whether the shared network could be used against the Borg.
24th century, film-era Enterprise-E mission Star Trek: First Contact, 24th-century framing story The Borg again threaten Earth, while the Enterprise-E crew pursues the sphere into 2063. The film’s time-travel structure links the 24th-century conflict with the Borg remains later found in “Regeneration.” It does not give a definitive account of the Collective’s origin.
24th century, during Voyager’s journey through the Delta Quadrant Voyager, “Scorpion” Captain Janeway makes a temporary alliance with the Borg against Species 8472. The events lead to Seven of Nine being separated from the Collective and joining Voyager. The Borg become more than an enemy to be fought: the alliance brings one of their drones into the crew’s story.
Voyager era, 24th century Voyager, “Unity,” “Drone,” “Dark Frontier,” and “Unimatrix Zero” These stories develop Voyager’s encounters with Borg individuals, technology, and the Collective. Together they extend the consequences of Seven’s separation and the crew’s continuing contact with the Borg.
Voyager’s return, 24th century Voyager, “Endgame” A future Admiral Janeway helps Voyager get home and infects the Borg with a neurolytic pathogen. The pathogen severely damages the Collective, but the story does not establish that every Borg or Borg group is permanently destroyed.
25th century, Picard season 2 Star Trek: Picard, season 2 A Queen cut off from her original Collective becomes entangled with Agnes Jurati. Jurati seeks to build a new collective. This is a distinct development from the original Collective’s later role in season 3, not simply the same faction under a new name.
2401 Star Trek: Picard, season 3, “Võx” and the Frontier Day story The Borg Queen and her faction exploit Jack Crusher’s connection to Picard and a new assimilation mechanism that spreads among young Starfleet personnel. The crew prevents the attack on Earth. The story revisits Locutus and the consequences of Picard’s assimilation. It does not settle the final status of every Borg collective.

When did the Borg first encounter Earth?

The earliest dated encounter shown is in 2063, when the Borg sphere from the 24th century arrives to stop the Phoenix flight. The Enterprise-E crew prevents that immediate plan, but Borg remains are left behind. In the 22nd century, those remains are reanimated in “Regeneration,” and the drones transmit a signal toward the Delta Quadrant.

That signal may be the first communication that alerts the wider Collective to Earth. The story makes it an important link between the film and the later Federation-facing conflict, but it does not fully explain when or how the Collective learned everything it later knows about Earth.

Did the Borg come from the future in First Contact?

No. The Borg in the film travel from the 24th century back to 2063; the time jump explains why they appear in that era, not where the Borg originated. The franchise material covered here provides no definitive origin date or home planet, and the Borg Queen is not established as the Borg’s creator.

The film creates a time-travel connection: the incursion leaves remains on Earth, and the surviving drones in “Regeneration” send a signal toward the Delta Quadrant. Treat this as the story’s temporal structure, rather than proof of a complete causal explanation for the Collective’s history.

When was Picard assimilated?

Picard is captured and assimilated in The Next Generation’s “The Best of Both Worlds.” The Borg use him as Locutus, a mouthpiece to communicate with and lead the attack against the Federation. The Enterprise crew rescues him after the conflict. The consequences of that assimilation remain important much later: Picard season 3 connects the Queen’s Frontier Day plot to Picard’s history as Locutus.

Which Borg stories should you watch, and in what order?

For a first watch, follow the series’ release order so that character introductions and reveals land as intended. The chronology below is useful if you want to follow the in-universe progression instead. It is a major-story sequence, not a claim that every episode has a precisely established date or that every Borg appearance is included.

  1. Star Trek: First Contact — the 2063 incursion, presented through a 24th-century Enterprise-E story.
  2. Enterprise, “Regeneration” — the 22nd-century aftermath of the incursion.
  3. The Next Generation, “Q Who,” then “The Best of Both Worlds” — the Borg’s introduction to the Enterprise-D crew and the assault that makes Picard Locutus.
  4. The Next Generation, “I, Borg” — the later encounter with an individual drone.
  5. Star Trek: First Contact — if you prefer to preserve the Enterprise-E framing story’s place after the TNG-era introductions, watch the film here rather than at the start. Its 2063 scenes still depict an earlier event.
  6. Voyager, “Scorpion,” followed by “Unity,” “Drone,” “Dark Frontier,” “Unimatrix Zero,” and “Endgame” — the major Borg arc during Voyager’s Delta Quadrant journey.
  7. Star Trek: Picard, season 2, then season 3 — the Jurati-linked group is a separate development from the Queen’s faction in the Frontier Day story.

The film’s two time periods make a single strict watch order misleading: its 2063 events belong at the beginning of the in-universe timeline, while its framing story belongs among the 24th-century stories. For a clean viewing experience, release order avoids that split.

How many Borg factions are there by Picard?

Keep the original Collective and Jurati’s group distinct. In season 2, Jurati’s story concerns a Queen cut off from her original Collective and the attempt to build a new one. Season 3 returns to the original Queen’s faction for the Frontier Day plot. The available story does not establish an exhaustive account of every Borg group’s fate after season 3.

The Queen is a recurring leadership role in the Borg stories, but the material here does not provide a full ordered identity or biography of every Queen appearance. It is safer not to treat all appearances as one uninterrupted individual life story.
