The Charlie Sheen–Chuck Lorre feud erupted publicly in February 2011, while Two and a Half Men was already on hiatus as Sheen entered rehabilitation. CBS and Warner Bros. then stopped production for the rest of the season, and Warner Bros. terminated Sheen’s contract the following month. The conflict flared again after the show’s 2015 finale, but Lorre later said he and Sheen reconciled and worked together on Bookie in 2023.
How the feud began in 2011
The rupture played out against an existing production break, rather than causing the initial hiatus. Two and a Half Men had paused while Sheen entered rehabilitation. In February 2011, Sheen began publicly attacking the sitcom’s co-creator and showrunner, Chuck Lorre, in radio and other interviews.

On February 25, CBS and Warner Bros. announced that they were discontinuing production for the remainder of the season. Their joint statement said the decision was based on “the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition.” The shutdown affected the show’s staff as well as its remaining episodes; the Los Angeles Times reported that at least 200 staffers faced being put out of work indefinitely.
Why was Charlie Sheen fired from Two and a Half Men?
The end of production and Sheen’s contract termination were separate decisions. CBS and Warner Bros. jointly announced the season shutdown in February. In March, Warner Bros. terminated Sheen’s contract. A Los Angeles Times report on the termination described the studio’s letter as alleging that Sheen’s conduct and admitted drug use breached his contractual obligations and harmed production.

Sheen’s lawyer rejected that position, calling it “specious and without merit” and saying he expected to sue. The report presented the studio’s allegations and the lawyer’s response; it did not adjudicate their dispute. It is therefore more accurate to say Warner Bros. terminated Sheen’s contract amid a public conflict and a production shutdown than to treat every allegation in the studio’s letter as an independently established finding.
What did Sheen and Lorre say about the conflict?
Lorre’s retrospective account
In a December 2011 interview, Lorre said, “I offered to quit the show last winter.” He said he did not want production to stop or people to lose their jobs, and described the situation as frightening. Lorre also said he believed Sheen might die. These were Lorre’s recollections and his account of the reasoning he attributed to the network and studio decision-makers, not an independent determination of Sheen’s condition or anyone’s private motives. TV Guide published Lorre’s account in December 2011.

Sheen’s remarks about Lorre’s name
During his attacks, Sheen referred to Lorre by his birth name, prompting accusations of anti-Semitism. Sheen denied that intent. As ABC News reported in February 2011, he said: “I was referring to Chuck by his real name, because I wanted to address the man, not the [expletive] TV persona.” The criticism and Sheen’s denial are both part of the public record; neither establishes his intent as a fact independent of his explanation.
The 2015 finale brought another public flare-up
Sheen criticized the Two and a Half Men finale after his character, Charlie Harper, returned and died. Time reported Sheen’s reaction, including ominous remarks about Lorre. Those comments marked another public episode in the feud, but they do not establish what the men’s private relationship was at the time.

How Sheen and Lorre reunited in 2023
More than a decade after their falling-out, Lorre said he reached out to Sheen while making Bookie. In a 2023 Los Angeles Times interview, Lorre described a phone conversation and meeting that he found healing, saying, “We had a terrific conversation” and calling the experience a “healing, closure kind of thing.” Sheen appeared on Bookie as a fictionalized version of himself.
Entertainment Tonight reported that Sheen asked for a script adjustment so the character would not be portrayed as actively in rehabilitation. Lorre described having worked with Sheen for eight and a half years before their relationship ended badly. Their collaboration supports describing the reunion as a professional reconciliation, and Lorre publicly characterized it as closure. The interviews do not establish the full private state of their relationship afterward.

- The feud became public during a hiatus that was already underway.
- CBS and Warner Bros. jointly stopped the remainder of the season; Warner Bros. later terminated Sheen’s contract.
- The studio’s stated grounds and Sheen’s lawyer’s response remain competing positions in the cited reporting, not a resolved finding about the contract dispute.
- The 2015 finale prompted renewed public criticism, while the 2023 Bookie appearance documented a later professional reunion.
For Sheen’s own perspective on the events, the Associated Press’s coverage of his memoir The Book of Sheen discusses his account of the hiatus and firing. It is a participant’s account, not a neutral or complete history of both sides: AP’s report on the memoir.
