To describe one clearly, choose its height (low, mid or high), its bottom length (skin or short guard), and its shape (such as drop or burst). Those are separate decisions: a low fade can reach the skin, and a high fade can stop at a short guard.
What makes a haircut a fade?
A fade transitions from longer hair into progressively shorter hair around the sides and back. A well-blended fade avoids conspicuous horizontal steps between lengths. The gradient below the top and the way the top connects to the sides are related, but distinct: a smooth lower fade can still meet the top at a deliberately disconnected line.
Barbering guides use low, mid and high to describe where the transition sits. The exact reference point is not universal across guides, so it is more useful to discuss the visible placement than to rely on a precise measurement.
Choose height, shape and bottom length separately

In this vocabulary, “skin” and “taper” do not tell you whether the fade is low, mid or high. For example, “low skin fade” combines a placement with a bottom length. The visual distinctions and terminology are described in Barber.Style’s guide to fade types and SalonExam’s barbering guide.

How to explain the haircut you want
Before the clippers start, tell your barber the choices you care about rather than relying on “fade” alone. A clear request can cover:
- Height: low, mid or high, described by where you want the transition to sit.
- Bottom: bare skin, or a short guard rather than skin.
- Shape: whether you want the fade to drop behind the ear or curve around it.
- Top: how much length to keep and how the sides should meet it.
- Neckline: the perimeter shape you prefer at the back.
Ask the barber to confirm the fade height before cutting. If the short guideline is placed higher than you wanted, the usual correction is to take more hair off; it cannot simply be moved lower without leaving the hair shorter.

How a fade is blended
For someone learning to cut, the sequence below is a general approach, not a guaranteed formula. Hair texture and growth patterns affect how a fade behaves, so the same guard sequence will not produce an identical result on every head.
- Plan the outline and height. Decide where the fade will sit and whether its shape will drop or burst.
- Remove bulk with a longer guard. Establish the longer area above the fade before setting the shorter transition.
- Set the short guideline. Keep the chosen height in view; a guideline that is too high is difficult to correct without going shorter.
- Work upward through longer lengths. Use progressively longer guards with overlap between sections rather than leaving isolated bands.
- Soften visible transitions. Adjust the clipper lever between guard changes and use an outward flicking motion to avoid creating a new hard line.
- Check the blend from several angles. Inspect both sides and the back in good light. Clipper-over-comb can help with stubborn areas and with the connection above the fade.
Guard numbers are approximate and vary by clipper brand. SalonExam gives these reference conversions: #1 is about 1/8 inch (3 mm), #2 about 1/4 inch (6 mm), #3 about 3/8 inch (10 mm), and #4 about 1/2 inch (13 mm). The lever can adjust length between guard changes; these figures are practical approximations, not a universal standard.

Tools for a home fade
The central tool is a hair clipper with a taper lever and a set of guards, because blending involves changing lengths gradually and adjusting between them. A comb helps manage longer sections and clipper-over-comb work; a hand mirror is useful for checking the back of the head. A trimmer can detail the perimeter, while clipper oil and a fade brush are supporting supplies rather than substitutes for blending technique.

- Visible bands: lengths may not overlap enough, or a transition may need further softening with lever adjustments.
- Uneven sides: the fade height may differ from one side to the other; compare both sides and the back instead of judging from one view.
- A fade that sits too high: lowering the guideline after cutting generally means removing more hair, so confirm placement first.
- A rough connection above the fade: the lower gradient may be smooth while the longer side and top remain poorly blended or intentionally disconnected. Clarify which finish you want.
