Marvel’s Hulks are not one interchangeable group defined by skin color. Red Hulk is General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, She-Hulk is Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters, and Amadeus Cho takes up the Hulk mantle through a distinct story about stabilizing Banner. Other gamma-powered characters—including Skaar, Red She-Hulk and A-Bomb—belong to the wider cast, but have different identities and roles.
Who are the different Hulks?
Bruce Banner’s Hulk is the reference point for the characters in this guide. Marvel’s Red Hulk account says Banner was transformed by radiation exposure during the first gamma bomb test; that is fictional continuity, not a real-world account of gamma exposure. The names below describe different characters and story histories, not a single transformation shared by everyone.
| Character | Established identity or relationship | What distinguishes the character in Marvel’s account |
|---|---|---|
| Hulk | Bruce Banner | The reference character for this wider cast; Marvel’s Red Hulk account connects his transformation to the first gamma bomb test. |
| Red Hulk | General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross | Banner’s longtime pursuer, who eventually becomes the thing he hates. Marvel says he generates heat when angry, can release it through his eyes, and can absorb energy, including gamma radiation. |
| She-Hulk | Jennifer Walters; Banner’s cousin | Marvel’s legacy guide identifies her as Hulk’s cousin. The cited pages establish that relationship, but do not provide a full current biography here. |
| Totally Awesome Hulk | Amadeus Cho | A teenage genius who takes on Hulk powers in a story where he absorbs the original Hulk’s powers to stabilize Banner. |
| Other gamma-powered characters | Skaar, Red She-Hulk and A-Bomb are among those named in Marvel’s legacy guide | They belong to Banner’s broader gamma-affected circle, but are not interchangeable identities or all simply versions of Bruce Banner. |
Who is Red Hulk?
Red Hulk is General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross, according to Marvel’s Red Hulk character account. Ross spends much of his life hunting Banner’s Hulk, then becomes a Hulk himself. The same character description gives him a distinctive heat-related ability: anger generates heat, which he can release through his eyes. It also says he can absorb energy, including gamma radiation. These are traits Marvel assigns to Ross’s Red Hulk, not a rule for every red-skinned character.
Marvel’s Red Hulk reading guide frames Ross as a reluctant hero who works alongside the Avengers and Thunderbolts. Its selected reading path includes Incredible Hulk (1962) #1, World War Hulk (2007) #1, Hulk (2008) #1 and #23, Avengers (2010) #7, and Thunderbolts (2012) #1, among later issues. This is a recommended selection, not a complete bibliography.
Is She-Hulk related to the Hulk?
Yes. She-Hulk is Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin. Marvel’s legacy guide identifies her as Hulk’s cousin, and its Red Hulk biography also names Jennifer Walters as Banner’s cousin. Those sources establish the family relationship; they are not a comprehensive account of every She-Hulk transformation or story.
How did Amadeus Cho become the Hulk?
Marvel’s account says teenage genius Amadeus Cho took on Hulk powers to save Bruce Banner from becoming the center of a radioactive meltdown. Cho absorbs the original Hulk’s powers, leaving Banner stable, and puts mental safeguards in place in an effort to avoid Banner’s loss of control. This describes the setup of Cho’s story, not a universal or permanent rule about how his powers work.
A direct entry point is The Totally Awesome Hulk (2015) #1. Marvel dates that issue to December 2, 2015, and credits Greg Pak as writer and Frank Cho as penciller. For a collected edition, Marvel lists The Totally Awesome Hulk Vol. 1: Cho Time as a trade paperback published July 13, 2016. It collects issues #1–6 and a Planet Hulk (2015) backup story. Marvel’s series page provides the issue-series context.

Who else belongs to Hulk’s wider circle?
Marvel’s legacy guide names Skaar, She-Hulk, Red She-Hulk and A-Bomb alongside Hulk, and separately calls Amadeus Cho the Totally Awesome Hulk. It describes Rick Jones’s transformation into A-Bomb and refers to Red She-Hulk as Hulk’s ex-wife in that guide’s story context. These characters help show why “all the Hulks” is broader than a green-versus-red pairing; the guide summarizes a particular stretch of comics, not a timeless continuity reference.

Marvel’s Champions guide also lists Totally Awesome Hulk as a Champions character and points readers to The Totally Awesome Hulk (2015) #1 for his solo-adventure context. A character’s inclusion in a gamma-powered circle or team context does not make that character’s identity, origin or powers identical to Banner’s.
