Callie killed Lottie in the literal sense: she pushed her down the stairs. But the finale also invites a more unsettling question—whether Shauna helped make Callie’s act possible through the family legacy and darkness Callie fears she has inherited. That is a reading of their relationship, not evidence that Shauna planned or ordered Lottie’s death.
Who physically killed Lottie?
Callie caused Lottie’s fatal fall in the Season 3 finale. She goes to Lottie’s apartment building to retrieve a tape, meets her in the stairwell, and pushes her after Lottie tells her that the Wilderness is “inside” her. TVLine recounts the scene, and the Los Angeles Times interview with co-creator and showrunner Ashley Lyle confirms Callie’s responsibility.
That settles the immediate mystery. The more disturbing theory is not that Shauna secretly committed the physical act, but that Callie’s violence reflects what she has absorbed from her mother.
Why viewers suspected other people
The show kept Lottie’s death open as a mystery before the finale. Shauna suspected Misty, Misty suspected Shauna, and Van wondered about Taissa. Lisa said she saw Taissa with Lottie on the day Lottie died. Later, Walter’s test of material found under Lottie’s fingernails pointed toward Shauna, with the possibility that Callie was also implicated.

Those clues created suspicion, but they did not establish that Shauna, Misty, or Taissa killed Lottie. The finale’s reveal identifies Callie as the person who pushed her; the earlier clues are part of the investigation and misdirection, not proof of a different killer.
How the Shauna theory makes sense
The case for Shauna’s deeper responsibility comes from the finale’s focus on Callie’s fear that she is becoming her mother. Asked about their relationship, Lyle told the Los Angeles Times: “I think an important question is, how much are you beholden to your family? How much are you beholden to who you are genetically? It’s definitely a question that has risen to the forefront for Callie. Am I my mother? Am I my mother’s daughter? What does that mean?”

That framing makes Callie’s act resonate beyond the stairwell. She is not simply another person caught up in the adults’ old story; she is wrestling with whether the traits she sees in Shauna are also part of her. In that sense, the finale can make Shauna feel implicated without revealing her as a conspirator or the person who pushed Lottie.
Lyle also described Shauna as losing her family while, in a way, being freed from a role that does not fit her. That observation speaks to Shauna’s character arc and the family’s fracture. It does not establish that she wanted Lottie dead or deliberately shaped Callie’s actions.

What Courtney Eaton’s interpretation adds
Actor Courtney Eaton has said she had an inkling Callie would be involved, pointing to Callie’s darkness and her similarity to Lottie. Eaton’s view supports the idea that Callie’s connection to the story is more than a surprise plot turn, but it is an actor’s interpretation—not confirmation of the writers’ explanation.
Eaton has also described the show’s supernatural ambiguity through the possibility that what characters experience comes from the human mind. That remains an interpretation, not proof that the Wilderness objectively caused Callie to push Lottie. The scene works as a human choice even while the series leaves room for viewers to question what the Wilderness means.

Literal guilt and inherited responsibility are different claims

The distinction matters because “Shauna really killed Lottie” is compelling as a thematic argument but inaccurate as a literal account of the finale. Callie’s act is confirmed; Shauna’s deeper responsibility is an interpretation of what the show says about family, identity, and inheritance.
