These nine picks offer distinct reasons to press play: a tightly wound Korean thriller, an animated family story, an Arctic-set sitcom, a strange-planet sci-fi series and more. “Underrated” here is an editorial judgment about titles that may suit viewers seeking something beyond the usual recommendations—not a claim that audience awareness has been measured.
Netflix picks for varied moods
Karma — a six-part thriller
Netflix Tudum describes this South Korean thriller as a chain reaction: a failed attempt to repay a dangerous loan shark connects the lives of six people. Choose it for a compact story built around intersecting consequences rather than a long-running procedural. Netflix Tudum’s guide provides the premise.

Long Story Short — an animated family story
Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s animated series follows a Jewish American family across different periods of their lives. Its shifting time frame makes it a fit for viewers who like character-driven family comedy and drama more than a single, continuous coming-of-age timeline. Netflix Tudum outlines the series in its Netflix viewing guide.
North of North — a community sitcom
Anna Lambe leads this Canadian comedy as a young Inuk woman rebuilding her life in a close-knit community. The setup points toward a warm, character-focused sitcom, with community life as part of the story rather than just a backdrop. See Netflix Tudum’s description.

Secrets We Keep — a Danish suburban mystery
A missing au pair and a neighbor determined to learn what happened drive this mystery. It’s a good match for viewers who prefer suspense rooted in relationships and a tightly bounded community. Netflix Tudum’s series guide describes the premise.
SAKAMOTO DAYS — action anime with domestic stakes
Based on Yuto Suzuki’s manga, this action anime follows a retired hit man trying to protect his family while living an ordinary life. The contrast between past violence and everyday responsibilities gives the action a clear comic hook. Netflix Tudum summarizes the series in its Netflix guide.

Schmigadoon! — musical comedy for theater fans
Two travelers stumble into a town where everyone behaves as though they live inside an old-school musical. JustWatch highlights the show’s musical-theater focus and prominent supporting cast. It is a natural choice for viewers who enjoy theatrical conventions and songs as part of the joke, rather than treating the musical format as a novelty to get past. JustWatch’s US streaming guide describes it as an Apple TV+ title.

Enlightened — workplace drama with a corruption fight
Laura Dern plays a woman demoted to an entry-level job who uncovers corporate corruption and decides to challenge it. The premise mixes personal frustration with an institutional fight, making it a strong pick for viewers who want an imperfect protagonist and workplace satire. JustWatch includes it in its US guide to under-the-radar shows and labels it an HBO title; check current viewing options in your country.
Scavengers Reign — animated science fiction on an alien world
A cargo-ship crew is stranded on a planet whose unfamiliar flora and fauna shape the danger around them. TVLine reports that the series was canceled, later streamed on Netflix, and did not receive a second-season order from Netflix. That release history is a reminder that streaming homes change: check a current catalog listing before subscribing or searching for it on a particular service. Streaming rights vary by country and can move between services. The JustWatch guides cited here are for the US; they are not universal catalog guarantees. TVLine’s account of Scavengers Reign documents how its streaming history changed, while its page on Tuca & Bertie describes a split catalog: seasons two and three on HBO Max and season one on Netflix at the time reported. For any title, search the service you already use or consult a current listing for your country before planning a watch.
