The October 16, 2024, NYT Strands puzzle has the theme clue “How Poe-tic.” Its answers point to Edgar Allan Poe’s poem The Raven: the spangram is THERAVEN, and the six theme words are DREARY, MIDNIGHT, NEVERMORE, PONDERED, WEAK, and WEARY.

Hints for October 16, 2024

Use these in order if you want to preserve some of the puzzle:

  1. The theme clue is “How Poe-tic.”
  2. Think of a famous poem by Edgar Allan Poe.
  3. Look for the poem about a mysterious bird that repeats a single word.
  4. The spangram names that poem’s central bird.

Spoiler: the spangram and answers

Spangram: THERAVEN

Six regular answers: DREARY, MIDNIGHT, NEVERMORE, PONDERED, WEAK, and WEARY.

How the answers connect to Poe’s poem

Five of the six regular answers appear together in the opening line of The Raven: “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,”. NEVERMORE is the raven’s recurring refrain: “Quoth the Raven ‘Nevermore.’” The spangram, THERAVEN, identifies the poem rather than adding another word from its text.

Poe’s poem was first published in 1845, according to the Poetry Foundation. That literary reference is the key to the puzzle: recognizing the poem supplies the vocabulary, while the spangram confirms the source.

Why the puzzle number may differ by archive

Contemporary October 2024 guides generally identify this as Strands game #227. A later archive labels the October 16 calendar puzzle #362. The date, theme, spangram, and answer list agree across the cited guides, but the game number is not consistent across archives.
