Bethesda Game Studios confirmed on July 17, 2026, that it is working on remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The studio announced no release dates. Calling the projects “remasters” follows Bethesda’s wording; some coverage has called them remakes, but the announcement does not establish that description.
What Bethesda has confirmed
Bethesda’s July 17 statement confirms that remasters of both games are in development. It does not say when they will launch or identify platforms, editions, preorders, or the teams making them. Those details remain unannounced in the cited coverage. GameSpot’s report of Bethesda’s statement is the source for the dated update.

Remaster or remake?
Bethesda’s quoted term is “remasters,” so that is the most reliable wording for now. GameSpot’s report also described the projects as “full remakes,” creating a terminology conflict. The announcement itself does not explain the intended scope of either project, so it is too early to infer specific changes to visuals, systems, or content.
Why earlier comments fueled doubts
Todd Howard’s preference was not a project update
In February 2026, Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard said he was “sort of anti-remake,” arguing that a game’s age contributes to its personality and historical character. He expressed a general preference for preserving older games’ character—not that these remasters had been cancelled or were not underway. Bethesda’s later confirmation makes that distinction clear. GameSpot reported Howard’s comments.

Chris Avellone’s concerns were opinion, not inside confirmation
In an interview excerpt reported on April 20, 2026, former Obsidian creative officer and Fallout: New Vegas writer Chris Avellone said he did not think Bethesda had the engineering know-how to remaster the game. He also questioned whether its source code and build process had been handed over, while allowing that Bethesda might have aspects of the code. These were Avellone’s views and uncertainty—not a verified account of Bethesda’s current assets, capabilities, or project status. PC Gamer covered Avellone’s comments.
Iron Galaxy’s image did not confirm its involvement
A February 26 image of a New Vegas loading screen posted by Iron Galaxy prompted speculation that the studio was teasing a remaster. Iron Galaxy clarified on March 4 that the slide was used for its monthly internal company meeting and was unrelated to Fallout development. That explanation debunks the inference that the image announced Iron Galaxy’s involvement; it does not establish which team is working on Bethesda’s confirmed remaster. GameSpot reported the clarification.

What is still unknown
- Release dates or a launch window
- Platforms and regional availability
- Whether either game will receive a remake-level overhaul or what changes the remasters will include
- Which development teams are assigned to the projects
- Pricing, editions, and preorder details
Bethesda’s announcement confirms development, but it does not answer these questions. There is no verified basis in the cited coverage for predicting a shadow drop or naming a release window.
