Mahoraga is the shikigami Megumi Fushiguro invokes through the Ten Shadows Technique, and its defining power is adaptation: the wheel above its head turns as it analyzes phenomena and can help it develop a defense or counter. That makes Mahoraga exceptionally dangerous, but not invincible; Sukuna’s Shibuya fight shows that adaptation takes time and can be overwhelmed.
Who is Mahoraga in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga is a shikigami associated with Megumi Fushiguro’s inherited Ten Shadows Technique. The official anime synopsis places Megumi’s summoning in the Shibuya Incident, after he is badly injured in a fight and attacked by Shigemo. The story presents Mahoraga as a perilous summon, not a routine ally Megumi can simply command. Its arrival draws Sukuna into the conflict.
The corresponding manga sequence is in chapters 117–118: VIZ lists chapter 117 immediately before chapter 118, whose official page is dated August 30, 2020. See the official anime episode 41 synopsis, VIZ chapter 117 and VIZ chapter 118.
How does Mahoraga adapt?
The wheel above Mahoraga’s head marks its analysis of phenomena it encounters. In the story, exposure can lead Mahoraga to adapt: it may become resistant to an effect, recover from damage caused by it, perceive an attack that was difficult to detect, or develop a way to get through an opponent’s defense. Repeated exposure to the same attack can speed the process, but the wheel does not mean Mahoraga becomes instantly immune to everything.

This ability gives Mahoraga time to learn an opponent’s technique and potentially turn that knowledge into a counter. It also creates a tactical opening: an opponent can vary attacks or try to defeat Mahoraga before its adaptation is complete. The story’s detailed mechanics are shown through the fights rather than established here as a universal turn count.
The wheel and the sword have different jobs
Mahoraga’s signature weapon is the Sword of Extermination, attached to its forearm. The character reference describes the sword as enveloped in positive energy, making it especially effective against cursed spirits. The wheel signals adaptation; the sword is a weapon, not the source of that ability.

Manga spoilers: What happens when Mahoraga fights Sukuna and Gojo?
Shibuya: Sukuna defeats Mahoraga
After Megumi summons Mahoraga in Shibuya, Sukuna fights it. Sukuna initially damages it with Dismantle; as the wheel turns and adaptation advances, Mahoraga withstands later slashes and counters. Sukuna ultimately defeats it with Malevolent Shrine’s repeated slashes followed by Divine Flame. The fight demonstrates both sides of adaptation: Mahoraga can learn and endure, but a sufficiently forceful shift in attack can still overwhelm it.
Later: Mahoraga finds an offensive answer to Infinity
In the later Gojo confrontation, Mahoraga adapts to Gojo’s Limitless defenses and produces a slash that targets the space occupied by its opponent, bypassing Infinity. Sukuna uses that development as a model for modifying his own slashing technique. This is adaptation used offensively: instead of merely resisting a defense, Mahoraga develops a way around it.
