To play the cello, first position it comfortably, learn the strings (C, G, D, A from lowest to highest), and make a clear sound on an open string. Start by plucking; then learn a relaxed bow hold and draw the bow steadily between the bridge and fingerboard. Add left-hand notes only after you can control the open-string sound. Pictures or close-up diagrams are especially useful for checking posture and bow hold, but a teacher can spot small adjustments that words cannot.
Identify the cello and bow
Before playing, locate the cello’s body, strings, fingerboard, bridge, tuning pegs, fine tuners, and endpin. On the bow, identify the frog, where the hand holds it, and the hair, which contacts the strings. Keep your fingers off the bow hair; oils from your skin can affect it. Follow your teacher’s or instrument maker’s guidance if you are unsure how to set up the bow or cello.
Rosin helps the bow grip the strings and produce sound. Apply it as directed for your bow and rosin; avoid treating bow preparation as a reason to tighten the bow excessively. Roman Mekinulov’s Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra beginner cello guide gives the concise warning: “Do NOT overtighten the bow”.
Sit and position the cello
Choose a stable chair and sit toward its front, with your feet comfortably beneath your knees. Extend the endpin until the cello rests securely against your body without forcing you into an awkward position. A beginner cue from Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements Strings Book 1: Cello is to lean the cello slightly left against the chest, with the C peg near the head behind the left ear and both knees touching the instrument below the C bout. The Buffalo Philharmonic guide gives different positioning cues, including keeping the instrument from sitting too high or too far forward.

These are starting points, not fixed measurements: body size, chair height, and instrument vary. The cello should feel supported rather than squeezed between the knees, and you should be able to move your arms freely. A front, side, or seated-player photo can help you compare your position; ask a teacher to check it if possible.
Learn the strings and tune
From lowest to highest, the cello strings are C, G, D, A. From highest to lowest, they are A, D, G, C. The C string is the thickest and lowest; the A string is the thinnest and highest.

Tune before playing, using a tuner or a smartphone tuner app. Fine tuners make small pitch adjustments; pegs make larger ones. Pegs can change pitch quickly, so do not force them or turn them abruptly. If you are new to tuning, ask a teacher or experienced adult to help, especially when a string is far out of tune. Hal Leonard’s beginner material has students wait for a teacher to tune at the opening stage.
Make your first sound by plucking
Set the bow aside safely and try pizzicato: plucking a string with a fingertip. Pluck an open string, which means you do not press it with the left hand. Listen to the difference in pitch as you try each string, starting with the open D or A if you are following Hal Leonard’s beginner sequence. Keep the plucks gentle and let each sound ring.

This first exercise teaches you where the strings are and lets you hear their pitches without coordinating both hands. Try a steady beat, counting evenly as you pluck. The Buffalo Philharmonic guide also uses pizzicato to help beginners learn string positions and notes.
Hold the bow and play an open string
A picture or close-up video of a bow hold is more useful than trying to copy a detailed hand shape from text alone. Ask a teacher to demonstrate and check your grip. The Buffalo Philharmonic guide’s beginner cues are to hold near the frog, keep the hand relaxed, round the thumb at the frog’s curve, and let the fingers rest on the bow. Avoid touching the hair, and follow the bow maker’s or teacher’s instructions for rosin and bow tension.

To bow an open string, set the bow hair on the string between the bridge and fingerboard. Keep your arm relaxed and draw the bow steadily rather than pressing hard. Start with a short stroke on one string; listen for an even tone, then pause and reset. If the sound is scratchy or breaks, slow down and check that the bow is moving smoothly and staying in contact with the string. Bow control takes practice, and a teacher can identify adjustments that are difficult to judge by feel alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add left-hand notes, rhythm, and simple music
Once you can make a reasonably steady open-string sound, begin first-position left-hand notes with guidance. Pressing a string changes its vibrating length and therefore its pitch; listen carefully as you place and release a finger. Start with a small number of notes and a simple rhythm rather than trying to learn many finger patterns at once.

Beginner methods do not all use the same sequence. Schott’s Cello Method: Lesson Book 1 by Gabriel Koeppen moves from holding the cello and bow, notation, and open strings toward string crossings, left-hand fingers on D and A, other strings, dynamics, a C major scale, and short tunes. Collins’ Abracadabra Cello Beginner includes activities covering posture, bow hold, finger position, pitch, rhythm, and reading. Your teacher may choose a different order to suit your progress.
