In a January 2022 interview about her novel Violeta, Isabel Allende described memory and accumulated life experience as the raw material of her fiction. The novel turns that personal foundation into the century-long story of a Chilean woman whose life is shaped by love, family, political upheaval and the changing rights of women.
What Allende means by “something personal”
“There is always something personal in what I write because my raw material is my memory and the experiences I have accumulated throughout my life,” Allende told Mayra Mangal in a People en Español interview published January 25, 2022. She was discussing Violeta, the novel presented in that interview as her latest at the time—not announcing her latest book in 2026.

For Allende, drawing on personal experience does not mean simply reproducing real people. She says she looks for role models to create characters who feel human rather than cartoonish, with the contradictions and complexities people carry. That distinction helps explain how lived experience can inform fiction without making a novel a straightforward memoir.
What Violeta is about
Violeta del Valle is born in southern Chile in 1920, on a stormy night coinciding with the Spanish flu’s arrival in South America. Her family’s loss of status during the Great Depression is one of the early upheavals in a life that stretches to 2020, the pandemic’s opening year.

Violeta tells her story in a long letter to her grandson, Camilo. Across that century, the novel follows her childhood in the countryside, love affairs, motherhood and friendships, while history presses in through World War II, military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina, and COVID-19. The historical events form the setting and pressure around an individual life; the story remains centered on Violeta and the relationships she makes and sustains.
How much of Violeta comes from Allende’s family?
The interview identifies Allende’s mother, Francisca “Panchita” Llona Barrios, as one inspiration for Violeta. She died at 97. That connection supports describing the character as partly inspired by Allende’s mother, not as a direct portrait or as the novel’s sole source. Allende’s own account of her fiction points to a wider reservoir: memory and experiences gathered over a lifetime.

Why women’s rights are part of the novel’s conversation
Allende also used the interview to warn that women’s rights can be vulnerable in periods of crisis. “We must always be vigilant,” she said, naming war, occupation, fanaticism and catastrophe as possible pretexts for women to lose rights. She expressed confidence that feminism would not be defeated and envisioned a future in which women and men share decision-making power equally.
That statement is Allende’s commentary, distinct from the novel’s plot summary. Read alongside Violeta’s long life, it foregrounds a question the century-spanning story invites: how do women preserve agency and relationships as social and political conditions change?
