Spoilers for Chainsaw Man through the Reze Arc. There is no official ranking of Denji’s love interests. Using “love interest” broadly to include people Denji is attracted to and relationships framed with romantic possibility, Makima and Reze are the two candidates best supported by the available sources: Makima is his explicit crush, while Reze and Denji quickly grow close. That does not make either bond a straightforward, mutual romance. This ranking focuses on those two; it does not rank later Part 2 developments or classify close friendships as romance.

How this ranking defines a love interest

Chainsaw Man does not publish a canonical list of Denji’s romantic partners. “Love interest” can mean anything from a crush to reciprocal affection, so this ranking uses two criteria: Denji’s expressed attraction and whether the story presents a romantic possibility between him and the other person. It also considers intimacy, agency, manipulation and what the dynamic means for Denji. A character’s importance to the plot is not, by itself, evidence of a healthy or mutual relationship.

The scope here is limited to the Reze Arc setup established in the sources below. Part 2 candidates and manga developments beyond that cutoff are not ranked. Power is discussed only as a comparison because closeness and affection alone do not prove romantic intent; Himeno is also left out because the available sources do not establish the chapter-level evidence needed to assess her under this definition.

1. Reze: the strongest romantic possibility, with a dangerous edge

The official Reze Arc story synopsis sets up Denji’s meeting with Reze after he has been looking forward to a date with Makima. He takes shelter from the rain, meets Reze, learns she works at a nearby café, and the synopsis says the pair quickly become close. That makes Reze the clearest candidate here for a relationship that develops beyond Denji’s initial crush.

Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s comments add useful context without turning the connection into a simple love story. In an official discussion, he described liking characters who show Denji clear interest while still making him wonder whether they like him; he also discussed Reze’s violent side. The romantic pull and danger belong together in the characterization, rather than one canceling out the other.

Reze’s voice actor, Reina Ueda, described performing a shift from an innocent, attractive impression to fighting Denji, while noting that their playful rapport remains. That is an actor’s account of the performance, not proof that their relationship is safe or fully reciprocal. The film’s director and assistant director have also described Denji’s growth through a new love and their effort to preserve the original character interactions in the adaptation.

Why Reze ranks first

  • Romantic possibility: The official synopsis says Denji and Reze quickly become close, and Fujimoto’s comments describe the deliberate appeal of her interest in him.
  • Emotional impact: Their connection is framed as part of Denji learning about love, not merely as an attraction he announces.
  • Important qualification: Reze’s violent side makes the dynamic dangerous. Romantic tension should not be mistaken for uncomplicated affection or a healthy partnership.

2. Makima: Denji’s explicit crush, not established reciprocity

Makima has the clearest evidence of Denji’s own attraction. The official Reze Arc synopsis says he admires her and is excited about their date. MANTANWEB’s cast interview likewise calls Makima Denji’s crush and describes his anticipation of the date. The actors characterize her as mysterious and contrast her with Reze’s more reachable quality.

Those details establish Denji’s feelings, not Makima’s. The sources support calling her his crush or a love-interest candidate, but they do not establish that her feelings are reciprocal or that the relationship is an equal romance. This distinction matters: Denji’s longing is real as a feature of his perspective even when it cannot be used as proof of mutual love.

Why Makima ranks second

  • Denji’s attraction is explicit: He admires her and looks forward to a date.
  • Reciprocity is not established: The cited material describes Denji’s crush, not a mutual relationship.
  • Her narrative role is not a romance score: Being central to Denji’s feelings does not by itself make the bond more intimate, mutual or healthy than another connection.

Why Power, Himeno and Asa are not ranked here

Power: close bond is not automatically romance

Power is a useful comparison because deep closeness and affection can be mistaken for romantic intent. The available evidence does not settle whether she qualifies as Denji’s love interest under this article’s definition, so placing her in a ranked romance list would overstate what is established here.

Himeno: brief or one-sided interest needs a separate definition

Himeno would belong in a broader list only if it explicitly included brief or one-sided attraction and grounded that reading in the relevant manga chapters. The sources used for this ranking do not provide that chapter-level verification, so she is not assigned a position.

Asa Mitaka: Part 2 is outside this ranking’s evidence cutoff

Asa is a candidate for a whole-series discussion because Part 2 exists, but the sources available here establish serialization history rather than specific relationship developments with Denji. MANTANWEB reports that Part 1 ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2018 to December 2020 and Part 2 began serialization on Shonen Jump+ in July 2022; those dates do not substantiate particular romantic beats. A fair ranking of Asa would need to state a later chapter cutoff and verify the relevant chapters.

What the ranking says about Denji’s romantic story

On the evidence within this scope, Reze ranks first because the connection is presented as a developing closeness with romantic possibility, while Makima ranks second because Denji’s crush is explicit but reciprocity is not established. Neither ranking position is a verdict that the relationship is healthy. The distinction between wanting someone, becoming close to them and being loved in return is central to reading Denji’s romantic story carefully.
