In English, Siobhan is commonly pronounced “shuh-VAWN”, with the emphasis on the second syllable. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries gives the Irish English pronunciation as /ʃəˈvɔːn/.

How to say Siobhan

  1. Say the name in two syllables: shuh + vawn.
  2. Keep the first syllable light, then stress the second: shuh-VAWN.

Oxford’s transcription, /ʃəˈvɔːn/, marks the first vowel as unstressed and reduced, with the main stress on the second syllable. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries labels this pronunciation Irish English.

Hear the name spoken

Forvo’s Siobhán page has several recordings categorized as Irish, including contributors identified as women and men from Ireland, as well as a separate English recording. The recordings can help you hear the syllable rhythm and vowel quality, but the page does not identify a regional dialect for each Irish speaker. They are examples from individual speakers, not a single definitive regional form.

Foras na Gaeilge’s foclóir.ie describes its dictionary resources as freely available and including sound files and usage notes. The site is a route to Irish-language learning resources; the material referenced here does not establish a Siobhán-specific entry.

Siobhan or Siobhán?

Oxford’s English headword is Siobhan, while Forvo’s Irish-language recording page uses Siobhán, with a fada over the a. Both spellings appear in these sources. Those entries alone do not establish a universal spelling or legal naming rule.
