Across a career of more than 60 years, he moved between popular hits and films by major auteurs—and also worked as a producer and director.
Why Le Samouraï became Delon’s signature role
In Melville’s 1967 crime film, Delon plays Jef Costello, a taciturn hitman whose precise routines and impassive face make him seem almost sealed off from the world. The part distilled an image that would follow Delon: elegant, watchful and difficult to read. It was a defining role, but not a summary of his entire career.
Delon later recalled that Melville described the story before he had heard its ending. When the director told him there was no dialogue in the scene he had outlined, Delon remembered replying: “Jean-Pierre, there’s not a word of dialogue in there, there’s no point in going any further. I’m in. Let’s do it.”
The Festival de Cannes describes Delon’s performance as distinctive and says Le Samouraï influenced later directors, including John Woo and Quentin Tarantino. The film’s spare, ritualized portrait of a hitman helped make Costello a lasting screen archetype.

The films that show Delon’s range
Delon’s career connected commercial cinema with work by filmmakers associated with modern European art cinema. The Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) highlights several films that illustrate how far he traveled beyond the reserved criminal persona of Le Samouraï.
| Film | What it adds to the picture of Delon |
|---|---|
| Plein soleil (1960) | René Clément’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley established an early screen presence combining charm and menace. |
| Rocco et ses frères (1960) | In Luchino Visconti’s family drama, Delon took on a role far removed from the self-contained hitman. |
| Le Guépard (1963) | Another Visconti film, it placed him in an expansive historical drama rather than a crime story. |
| La Piscine (1969) | Jacques Deray’s thriller continued Delon’s collaborations in popular, psychologically charged cinema. |
| Borsalino (1970) | Deray paired Delon with Jean-Paul Belmondo in a major French gangster film. |
| Le Clan des Siciliens (1969) | This crime film is among the prominent popular productions in the CNC’s account of his career. |
| Monsieur Klein (1976) | Joseph Losey’s drama showed Delon in a demanding work of auteur cinema, which he also helped produce. |
The Festival de Cannes places Delon’s work with Michelangelo Antonioni, Luchino Visconti, Jean-Pierre Melville, Joseph Losey, Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Deray alongside his box-office success. That combination helps explain why he is remembered both as a popular star and as an actor whose image was shaped by directors with sharply distinct styles.

Delon worked behind the camera, too
Acting was not his only role in filmmaking. The French Ministry of Culture notes that Delon supported the production of Losey’s Monsieur Klein, a project he said he pursued because he wanted the film to be made. In a 2018 interview republished by Le Monde after his death, he reflected on his approach to the part: “Once again, everything I did, I truly lived.”
Delon also directed. His 1981 crime thriller Pour la peau d’un flic extended his involvement from performance and production to directing.

From military service to a six-decade film career
Born in 1935 in Sceaux, France, Delon moved into cinema after military service and a return to Paris, according to the Ministry of Culture. The CNC describes his acting career as lasting more than 60 years—a broad institutional characterization rather than a precise count of years on screen.
In 2019, the Festival de Cannes awarded him an honorary Palme d’or for his body of work. Its tribute after his death said: “Alain Delon, l’artiste, demeurera : il laisse derrière lui une filmographie éblouissante et une trace ineffaçable.” (“Alain Delon, the artist, will endure: he leaves behind a dazzling filmography and an indelible mark.”) The French Ministry of Culture’s tribute similarly emphasized his range, from auteur films to productions for a broad audience and from police officers and gangsters to troubled romantic figures.
