Episode 2 of Adult Swim’s four-part Uzumaki looks markedly different from its striking premiere, according to contemporary reviews: critics pointed to flat-looking CG character models and rigid movement where the first episode had detailed shadows and a rotoscoped feel. Executive producer Jason DeMarco reportedly said the production chose to air all four episodes despite serious problems, but his reported remarks did not explain what caused the visual change or identify who was responsible.
What viewers noticed in Episode 2
In an October 7, 2024 review, Gizmodo’s Isaiah Colbert described the animation as “wildly inconsistent.” He contrasted the premiere’s rotoscoped quality and detailed shadows with Episode 2’s flat CG character models and rigid movement. Those are a reviewer’s observations and judgments, not the findings of a technical audit.
GamesRadar’s October 8 report also described the sharp reaction to the episode, including one viewer’s comparison of its animation to a “PS2 era game.” That is an attributed example of audience response, not evidence of a measured consensus.
For a viewer comparing the episodes, the most useful points to watch are how consistently characters are drawn and animated, how they move, how quickly events unfold, and how each episode translates Junji Ito’s detailed black-and-white imagery.

Why the episode can feel so rushed
Gizmodo described Episode 2 as adapting roughly six manga chapters into 27 minutes. That brisk compression offers context for its pacing, but it does not by itself explain the change in animation or establish how the episode was produced.
Uzumaki is a four-episode adaptation of Ito’s horror manga. VIZ Media’s announcement describes the series as a collaboration between Adult Swim and Production I.G USA, with black-and-white animation intended to pay homage to the manga’s aesthetic. That stated visual aim helps explain the premiere’s appeal; it does not document what happened behind the scenes on Episode 2.

What Jason DeMarco reportedly said—and what he did not
GamesRadar reported that Toonami co-creator and Uzumaki executive producer Jason DeMarco addressed criticism in Bluesky posts that were later deleted. According to the outlet, he said the team considered three options: stop and air nothing, finish and air only Episode 1, or run all four episodes despite their flaws. He said the team chose the last option out of respect for the work.
“It’s fine, we knew this would happen. I can’t talk about what went down but we were screwed over and the options were A) Not finish and air nothing and call it a loss, B) Just finish and air Ep 1 and leave it incomplete or C) Run all four, warts and all. Out of respect for the hard work, we chose C.”

GamesRadar also quoted DeMarco as saying, “After waiting so long, it makes sense people would be mad. Unfortunately I can’t tell them who to blame it on…but someone is definitely at fault here, and we all just had to do our best when things imploded. Maybe others would have made different choices. We did the best we could with what we had.”

How to watch or compare the adaptation
Adult Swim’s official listing identifies a subtitled Episode 2 and links to dubbed and subtitled episodes in the four-episode series. The listing confirms the episode’s place in the series, not universal access. For the source artwork, VIZ named digital sell-through platforms for a launch announced on October 26, 2024; that historical announcement does not confirm current availability on each service.
Readers who want to compare the adaptation with Ito’s original visual storytelling can look to Junji Ito’s Uzumaki manga. The manga provides the source imagery; it does not explain the anime’s production problems.
