In February 2025, co-founder Burnie Burns said he had acquired the Rooster Teeth brand and many of its remaining properties through Box Canyon Productions. He also cautioned that substantial work remained before a relaunch. Plans reported at the time are not proof that new shows or episodes were later released.
Why Rooster Teeth shut down in 2024
Warner Bros. Discovery announced Rooster Teeth’s shutdown in March 2024. The company, founded in 2003, was known for online series such as Red vs. Blue. Rooster Teeth general manager Jordan Levin explained the closure in a statement quoted by Axios: “It’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.”
Axios reported that about 150 full-time employees would be laid off and work would also be frozen for dozens of contractors and content creators. It reported that Rooster Teeth FIRST had fallen from roughly 225,000 paying members at its peak to about 60,000 at the time of the 2024 shutdown coverage. Those are approximate historical figures, not current staffing or subscription numbers.
What Burnie Burns acquired—and what he announced
On February 5, 2025, Burns announced through Box Canyon Productions that he had acquired “the Rooster Teeth brand and many of its remaining properties.” In the official statement, he added: “There is a lot of work to do around here before our re-launch.” The announcement therefore established a change in ownership and an intention to revive the brand, not that the relaunch was already underway.

Burns directed readers to the February 5 episode of the Morning Somewhere podcast for more deal details. PC Gamer reported that Burns described the focus as the website, YouTube channel, social accounts, and shows, while some properties associated with Rooster Teeth were outside the deal. The purchase should not be read as a reacquisition of every franchise or asset once connected to the company. PC Gamer’s account of the announcement said Burns anticipated bringing back some older shows, adding new material, and having production running by summer 2025. That was a target stated in February 2025, not confirmation of later releases.
Does the comeback mean new Rooster Teeth shows are out?
The announcement and contemporaneous reporting establish an acquisition and a plan. They do not establish which productions, if any, subsequently released, what production staffing is now in place, or whether the announced slate proceeded. The official store’s Rooster Teeth-branded merchandise shows that products are listed for sale; it does not demonstrate that a production studio is operating or that the company has returned to its previous scale.

For fans checking a specific series, the practical distinction is between a brand revival and verified availability of that title. The sources cited here do not establish current streaming availability for Rooster Teeth programs. A Red vs. Blue Blu-ray listing in the official Rooster Teeth Store is a concrete physical-product listing, but it does not verify stock at other retailers.

RWBY was not simply included in Burns’s publicly described acquisition. VIZ announced on July 5, 2024 that it had acquired the series and said it held future distribution, production, licensing, and consumer-product rights. VIZ said it would explore new chapters. Its announcement FAQ said at that time that no new season had been announced, while the company explored wider distribution, including possible home-video releases and additional streaming platforms. These were VIZ’s statements in 2024, not a current update on season or platform availability.

In its July 2024 announcement, VIZ reported that RWBY had accumulated over 350 million global views across platforms and averaged more than 7 million views per episode. Those are figures VIZ supplied in 2024, not current audience measurements. The rights distinction matters: a Rooster Teeth brand revival does not by itself determine the future of a property acquired separately by VIZ.
